Hurricane Helene is set to hit Florida with devastating weather conditions.

    • The US National Hurricane Centre has issued alerts for catastrophic rain and wind.
    • Evacuations have been mandated across 15 counties in Florida.
    • States of emergency are declared in numerous regions for protection.
    • Major disruptions include flight cancellations and potential flooding.

Hurricane Helene is rapidly approaching Florida’s northwest coast, bringing with it the threat of severe weather conditions. Warnings of catastrophic rain, strong winds, and storm surges have been issued, prompting widespread concern across the region. The US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has highlighted the urgent need for preparedness as Helene gathers strength over the Gulf of Mexico.

The hurricane’s intensification is expected to bring maximum winds of 85mph, with even stronger gusts likely. The forecast includes up to 18 inches of rain in some parts of the southeastern United States. John Dailey, Tallahassee’s mayor, emphasized the urgency, stating, “We have no more time left to wait. We urge you to stay weather aware as we’re on the verge of what could be a historic event.“

Evacuations are underway in 15 coastal counties in Florida, where states of emergency have been declared in all but 10 of the state’s 71 counties. This strategic move aims to safeguard life and property from the impending danger.

As a measure of public safety, all flights to and from Tallahassee Airport have been cancelled. This disruption reflects the severity of the expected impact, as local authorities and residents brace for Hurricane Helene’s landfall. Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has updated its travel advice, alerting of a hurricane watch and tropical storm warnings in the northern region.

Originally impacting Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as a tropical storm, Hurricane Helene has now gained enough strength to be reclassified. Its trajectory remains closely monitored as states like Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia join Florida in declaring states of emergency, each taking precautionary measures to minimise damage.

Preparations are underway as Florida and surrounding states brace for Hurricane Helene’s anticipated wrath.
