Vince Johnson, the general manager of Redworth Hall in County Durham, has announced his retirement after an extensive 42-year career in the hospitality sector.

    • Johnson commenced his journey in the industry at just 17, beginning as a trainee waiter at the Old Ship hotel in Brighton.
    • He played a pivotal role at Redworth Hall, overseeing major projects such as conferences, restaurant refurbishments, and hosting the England football team.
    • Johnson’s career is marked by his long-standing tenure with the Cairn Hotel Group, holding the managerial position at Redworth Hall for over two decades.
    • As he prepares for retirement, Johnson reflects on a rewarding career, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he encountered.

Vince Johnson, a veteran in the hospitality sector, has decided to retire following a remarkable 42-year journey. Johnson began his career as a trainee waiter at the Old Ship hotel in Brighton when he was only 17 years old. Quickly rising through the ranks, he transitioned to a management role within two years, holding various positions across locations such as Guernsey, Carmarthen, Bristol, St Ives, Harrogate, and Southampton. In May 2001, his expertise and dedication led him to join the Cairn Group as the general manager of Redworth Hall.

During his initial tenure at Redworth Hall, Johnson made significant contributions, including the launch of the Prince’s Bishop Suite conference centre and the refurbishment of two restaurants. He also had the honour of hosting former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson and the England football team in 2003. These accomplishments underscored his commitment to enhancing guest experiences and operational excellence.

In 2004, Johnson accepted a position at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate—now known as the Doubletree by Hilton Majestic Hotel—only to return to Redworth Hall in 2015, where he continued to make impactful changes until his retirement. Over the course of 23 years, he remained a steadfast leader within the Cairn Hotel Group, a company known for managing 29 hotels and eight restaurants and bars across the UK.

Johnson has often credited his career’s success to the unforeseen opportunity that came from his first interview as a teenager. Reflecting on his career, he exclaimed, “Walking into that interview at 17 for a trainee waiter job was the best thing that ever happened to me. Redworth Hall has been a huge part of my life for over two decades.” Johnson expressed profound gratitude for the experiences and relationships nurtured over the years, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of his retirement.

Commenting on Johnson’s retirement, Richard Adams, HR Director at Cairn Hotel Group, expressed immense gratitude for Johnson’s enduring commitment, noting his influence in shaping the company’s culture and inspiring future generations. Johnson’s approach epitomises the group’s ethos that hospitality represents a lifelong career, rather than just a job.

Looking forward to his retirement, Johnson is eager to join a health club, pursue golf lessons, and tackle home and garden projects that he has long postponed. His retirement marks the end of a distinguished era, celebrated with admiration and respect from colleagues and industry peers alike.

Vince Johnson departs from a rewarding and impactful journey in hospitality, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations in the industry.
