Viking Expands Winter River Cruises in Europe

Viking has announced the addition of a new winter itinerary to its European river cruises, enhancing travel opportunities during the season.

    • The new 10-day River Danube cruise will run from December 2024 to March 2025, between Budapest and Passau.
    • This follows the success of Viking’s Rhine cruises, which began last December, offering a unique seasonal travel experience.
    • Winter cruises are highlighted for their advantages: less crowded tourist spots, easier landmark access, and the chance to enjoy local traditions.
    • Viking Chairman, Torstein Hagen, emphasises Europe’s continued popularity for its rich cultural history and scenic beauty best explored via river cruises.

Viking, known for its extensive river cruise offerings, is broadening its winter itinerary with a new 10-day cruise on the River Danube. Operating from December 2024 to March 2025, this route will connect Budapest and Passau, presenting travellers with a distinctive opportunity to explore Central Europe during the quieter winter months.

This addition comes on the heels of Viking’s successful Rhine cruises, which were introduced last December. These itineraries have proven popular due to the unique advantages of winter travel, including fewer crowds, which allows for unimpeded access to landmark sites, and the possibility to observe and partake in local traditions.

The cruising season between March and December continues robustly, offering itineraries on prominent rivers such as the Rhine, Main, Danube, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Moselle, and Elbe. The newly added winter voyage aligns with Viking’s strategic expansion of their offerings, aiming to provide guests with uninterrupted and enjoyable travel experiences regardless of the season.

According to Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen, Europe’s rivers remain the most sought-after cruise destinations due to their unparalleled cultural and historical significance. He stated, “With its rich history, culture and scenic regions, Europe truly captivates our audience. River voyages not only provide a seamless travel method but enhance the exploration experience throughout the year.”

As more travellers become aware of river cruises as an advantageous mode of travel, Viking continues to leverage this interest by initiating new routes and seasonal offerings. The company’s commitment to improving access and diversifying experiences ensures passengers can engage with Europe’s beauty and history in comfort.

Viking’s expansion into winter river cruises reinforces the appeal of European waterways as year-round travel destinations.
