Stena Line has made a decisive move to broaden its geographical footprint beyond Europe by acquiring a 49% stake in Africa Morocco Link (AML), a prominent ferry operator in the Strait of Gibraltar. Based in Tangier, AML operates a vital route between Tanger Med in Morocco and Algeciras in Spain. This partnership reflects Stena Line’s strategic interest in the bustling passage that serves as a key conduit for passenger and freight traffic between Africa and Europe.
The new venture promises to enhance connectivity with the introduction of a high-speed ferry route linking Tangier Ville directly to the Spanish port of Tarifa, which is anticipated to commence this summer. Such developments are poised to bolster the transport infrastructure across the strait, catering to the dynamic demands of both passenger and vehicle travel.
This agreement, however, is contingent upon gaining the requisite approvals from Moroccan authorities, a crucial step before the deal can be finalised. Stena Line’s CEO, Niclas Martensson, highlighted the strategic importance of this region, stating, “We are always looking to secure new business opportunities that will make us last and be resilient in the long run.”
The Strait of Gibraltar is a strategic location not only for tourism but also for global trade. With Morocco experiencing positive industrial growth and an uptick in international trade, freight volumes in the region are expected to surge in the coming years. This growth trajectory positions the strait as a crucial logistics hub, reinforcing the significance of Stena Line’s investment.
Stena Line has an established presence in northern Europe, operating 38 vessels across 18 routes, conducting an impressive 26,000 sailings annually. By expanding into North Africa, the company is set to diversify its portfolio and tap into burgeoning markets.
