Liverpool has emerged as the leading large city for breaks in the UK, according to a new survey by Which?.

    • The survey assessed nearly 4,000 members’ experiences of UK cities, focusing on various criteria including cultural and tourist attractions, accommodation, and value for money.
    • Liverpool scored 84%, outranking cities like Belfast, London, Cardiff, and Manchester as it impressed with its cultural offerings.
    • Edinburgh and York came joint second, with a city score of 83%, showcasing rich cultural activities and historic significance.
    • Meanwhile, Derby, Leicester, and Swansea were rated the lowest among large cities in the survey.

The latest Which? survey has crowned Liverpool as the UK’s top large city for a break, a recognition based on feedback from almost 4,000 members who evaluated their visits to UK urban areas over two years. Scoring an impressive 84%, Liverpool triumphed in large cities ranking, surpassing notable capitals such as Belfast, London, Cardiff, and neighbouring Manchester.

Liverpool’s vibrant atmosphere and abundant cultural and historical sites, beyond its famous Beatles heritage, earned it a full five stars in the cultural sights and tourist attractions category. Visitors are drawn to Liverpool’s lively energy and diverse offerings, making it a standout choice for both domestic and international tourists.

In joint second place, both Edinburgh and York achieved city scores of 83%. Edinburgh, often described as ‘stunning’, captivates visitors with a wealth of cultural activities and scenic vistas. York, renowned for its Roman and Viking history, also attained a five-star rating in the cultural sights category, demonstrating its enduring appeal.

On the other end of the spectrum, the survey rated Derby, Leicester, and Swansea as the lowest for large cities, each receiving scores below 60%. This highlights a disparity in satisfaction, suggesting that these cities may need to enhance their tourist and cultural offerings to compete effectively.

Wells in Somerset stood out in the small cities category with an impressive 86%, the highest score overall, showcasing its charm and cultural depth.

The survey underscores Liverpool’s position as a cultural and tourist hub, setting a benchmark for other UK cities.
