New research has revealed the top areas for Rome foodies who want to indulge in authentic Italian cuisine.

According to a study by Colosseum Tours & Tickets, Termini takes the crown as the best neighbourhood for foodies in Rome, earning a top score of 75.11, while other popular spots like Navona and Monti also rank high for their culinary offerings.

Using data from TripAdvisor and Booking.com, the research analysed various factors such as the number of pizzerias with high ratings, availability of vegan restaurants, and hotel options. Termini stood out with an impressive 65 pizzerias rated four stars or higher and a wide selection of 193 hotels, making it a convenient and flavour-packed destination for travellers. The area’s central location and variety of dining options make it a hotspot for both locals and tourists seeking authentic Roman dishes.

Not far behind, the iconic areas of Navona, Pantheon, and Campo de’ Fiori ranked second with a score of 74.02, earning high praise for their extensive list of pasta restaurants. These areas are perfect for those with a passion for Italian classics, boasting 196 restaurants known for serving traditional Roman pasta. However, food lovers should be prepared to spend more here, as it ranked lowest in affordability among the top ten.

Monti, Rome’s trendy and historic district, came in third with a score of 65.99. Known for its vibrant food scene, Monti excels in pizza, boasting 65 highly rated pizzerias. The area is ideal for travellers seeking both culture and cuisine, with its narrow streets lined with artisanal shops and family-run restaurants offering some of the best slices in the city.

In fourth place, the Vaticano, Borgo, and Prati areas scored 61.13. These neighbourhoods are a great choice for those seeking variety, with 96 top-rated pizzerias and 118 vegan-friendly restaurants, showcasing the growing diversity of Rome’s dining scene. From classic Roman pizza to more health-conscious options, foodies have plenty to savour.

Trastevere, often celebrated for its bohemian charm, took fifth place with a score of 54.88. While it’s famous for its cosy trattorias and lively nightlife, it falls short in terms of hotel availability, offering only 14 options for accommodation. However, the neighbourhood’s reputation for great food remains intact, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Rome’s culinary treasures.

Nomentano ranked sixth with a score of 44.65, standing out for its affordability. If you’re looking for authentic Italian food without breaking the bank, Nomentano offers excellent value for money. With modestly priced restaurants, this area is a hidden gem for budget-conscious foodies who still want to experience the best of Roman cuisine.

The rankings also highlighted other neighbourhoods like Appio-Latino, Aurelio, and Aventino, which all offer varying degrees of dining experiences. Aurelio, for instance, scored highly for its affordable, top-rated pizzerias, while Trionfale, in ninth place, is a paradise for vegan travellers, offering excellent value and numerous plant-based dining options.

Magdalena Petrusic, a travel expert from Colosseum Tours & Tickets, commented on the findings, saying: “Rome’s culinary landscape has always been vast and varied, and this study emphasises that. From traditional Roman dishes like Carbonara and Cacio e Pepe to modern fusions in areas like Trastevere, there’s something for every palate.”
