US Travel Advisory Canada Updated Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

The US Department of State has issued a US travel advisory for Canada for the first time since June 2025, adding guidance specific to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and warning American travellers that expired or missing travel documents could result in fines or penalties at the border.

What the US Travel Advisory for Canada Actually Changes

The advisory level and risk indicators remain unchanged. The update does not elevate Canada to a higher category of concern. What changed is the advisory summary, which now includes an expanded crime section and a dedicated passage on the World Cup.

On crime, the State Department notes that petty crime is common in popular tourist locations, citing purse snatching, pickpocketing and car break-ins as the primary risks. The advisory adds that ‘Canada is generally a safe destination for travelers’ and that most crimes against foreign visitors are opportunistic rather than targeted.

The World Cup addition, drawn from guidance issued by the US Embassy and Consulates in Canada, sets out what travellers should expect: crowds, heavy traffic and high demand across all transport modes. Critically, the Embassy uses the update to push a firm reminder on document validity, warning Americans to check expiration dates well in advance and apply for renewals before travel to avoid last-minute stress and potential extra fees.

Document Requirements and Border Rules for World Cup Travel

The State Department is explicit on what is and is not acceptable at the border. Americans flying into or travelling domestically within Canada must present a valid US passport book. NEXUS cardholders may use certain airports for entry and return via specific pre-clearance airports. Passport cards are limited to land-border crossings and ferry travel only.

The Embassy guidance states: ‘We encourage all Americans heading to Canada to review the expiration date of their travel document. Apply for or renew your US passport or passport card well before travel to avoid any last-minute stress or extra fees. Check processing times to renew by mail or online through the online passport renewal program.’

On prohibited items, the advisory is direct. Cannabis in all forms, including edible products, extracts and CBD-containing items, cannot be carried across the border. Undeclared firearms and ammunition are also prohibited. The Embassy advises travellers to check bags, clothing pockets and vehicles before departure.

The before-travel checklist also includes enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), reviewing Canada’s Destination Information page and confirming that travel and health insurance is in place. The advisory notes that the Canadian public health care system generally does not offer free treatment to non-Canadians, and that the US Embassy and Consulates do not pay medical bills.

Scale of the World Cup Influx Into Canadian Host Cities

The advisory update reflects the practical pressure building around the tournament. The Guardian reports that the 2026 World Cup spans 104 matches across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States, making it the largest edition of the tournament by match count. Toronto and Vancouver are among the Canadian cities expecting some of the heaviest visitor volumes.

Short-term accommodation demand is already registering that pressure. According to Airbnb Newsroom, hosts in and around Toronto and Vancouver are projected to welcome approximately 61,000 guests during the tournament period. That level of demand will compound the transport and logistics strain the advisory already flags.

The State Department’s after-arrival advice covers situational awareness, avoiding demonstrations and protests, and standard personal security measures such as not leaving visible items in parked cars. Travellers are also advised to write down emergency contact information, including the address of their hotel and the nearest US consular section, before departing.

The full pre-travel checklist and updated advisory summary are available through the US Department of State’s travel portal, with the Embassy guidance urging Americans to complete all document checks and renewals well ahead of their departure date.
