AeroVironment and Applied Intuition have validated Mayhem 10 swarm autonomy in a live demonstration, showing that several of the launched-effects aircraft can synchronise movements, share targeting data and adapt to shifting threats under the supervision of a single operator. The companies formalised a strategic teaming agreement on 29 July 2026 to integrate Applied Intuition’s Acuity ISR/Strike autonomy software with AeroVironment’s Mayhem 10 system.
What the Mayhem 10 swarm autonomy demonstration showed
During the demonstration, multiple Mayhem 10 aircraft operated as a coordinated swarm, adjusting their actions in response to different threat scenarios and working together to find, track and engage targets. AeroVironment said a single operator supervised the aircraft throughout rather than directly controlling each vehicle. The companies described the resulting capability as supporting collaborative “hunter-killer” operations.
According to Yahoo Finance, the demonstration validated months of integration work conducted across multiple locations using AeroVironment’s Autonomy Interface Control Document (ICD), a structured framework that governs how third-party software connects to the aircraft’s systems. That open-architecture approach is central to AeroVironment’s commercial proposition for the platform: outside companies can add software and payloads without redesigning the entire system.
Applied Intuition General Manager Jason Brown framed the capability in operational terms. ‘Modern warfare demands trusted systems that can think, coordinate and adapt faster than the adversary,’ he said.
Mayhem 10 background and the US Army Launched Effects programme
AeroVironment introduced the Mayhem 10 in April 2026 at the Army Aviation Association of America’s Mission Solutions Summit in Nashville, according to Inside Unmanned Systems. The platform draws on the heritage of the company’s Switchblade loitering munitions family, extending that line into a more modular, multi-role architecture. AeroVironment Senior Vice President of Loitering Munitions Brian Young put it directly: ‘Mayhem 10 isn’t just a munition. It’s an architecture.’
The aircraft is designed to launch from air, ground and maritime platforms and can carry up to 10 pounds of mission equipment across ranges exceeding 100 kilometres. AeroVironment lists an endurance of more than 50 minutes, a cruise speed of 80 mph and a dash speed of 120 mph. Crews can assemble and launch the aircraft in less than five minutes, the company says. Its interchangeable payload section supports intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) equipment, electronic warfare systems, communications relays, decoys and precision-strike weapons, giving operators the option to configure individual aircraft for lethal or non-lethal missions depending on requirements.
The Acuity integration and the swarm demonstration both support the US Army’s Launched Effects programme, which is seeking small uncrewed aircraft capable of deploying from crewed or uncrewed platforms to extend surveillance, targeting, electronic warfare and strike reach. The Mayhem 10’s ability to deploy across platform types positions it as a candidate for that requirement, though no contract awards have been disclosed in connection with this demonstration.
AeroVironment says the Mayhem 10 can operate in environments affected by GPS jamming, spoofing and degraded communications. The company has noted those performance claims have not been independently verified under operational conditions.
The integration work between AeroVironment and Applied Intuition required several months of effort at multiple sites before the swarm demonstration could proceed. With the teaming agreement now formalised and the first coordinated swarm trial complete, the next stage will be further development of the Acuity software’s role in Mayhem 10 swarm autonomy across a broader range of operational scenarios, including contested electronic environments where GPS and communications links may be disrupted.
