The Spokane Complex Fire evacuations have forced thousands of residents from their homes and prompted widespread travel disruption across the Pacific Northwest, as Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency in response to one of the region’s worst recorded fire seasons.
Spokane and its surrounding county are currently contending with four simultaneous wildfires collectively known as the Spokane Complex: the Old Trails Fire, the Fairview Fire, the Meadowbrook Fire, and the Autumn Lane Fire. The Old Trails Fire, the largest of the four, broke out northeast of city limits around noon on 1 August 2026, and has since crossed the Spokane River into the city itself. High winds overnight accelerated the blaze, overwhelming electricity infrastructure and saturating cellular networks as residents scrambled to act on Level 3 evacuation orders to ‘leave now due to the life-threatening conditions.’
By Saturday evening, nearly 13,000 customers had lost power, and internet and mobile services were severely disrupted as towers became overloaded. Dozens of homes have already been destroyed, with thousands more at risk. An initial evacuation centre established at Spokane Falls Community College was forced to relocate after a power outage, and the Spokane Convention Center is now the primary refuge point for displaced residents. Travellers and residents can monitor their status via the Spokane County Evacuation Address Lookup tool.
Spokane Complex Fire Evacuations Trigger Airline Rebooking Policies
For the travel trade, the immediate operational question concerns air access. Spokane International Airport remains open at the time of writing, but the scale of the Spokane Complex Fire evacuations has prompted passengers to reschedule in volume. American Airlines has announced free rebooking on flights serving Spokane International, and other carriers are expected to introduce similar waivers. Road closures, poor air quality, and the absence of reliable power and communications make the region effectively off-limits to leisure and business visitors for the foreseeable future.
The fires extend well beyond Spokane’s boundaries. Washington State is simultaneously battling ten large-scale fires, and nearly half a million acres have already burned across the state during this fire season. Governor Ferguson declared the statewide emergency and confirmed on X that he would travel to Spokane on Sunday morning. ‘I’ll be heading to Spokane Sunday morning to meet with responders and monitor the emergency response. My thoughts are with the first responders and all those under evacuation tonight. If you are in the area, please continue to be vigilant and follow directions of emergency personnel,’ Ferguson posted.
A Regional Crisis: Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia Also Affected
The Spokane Complex Fire is one flash point in a broader regional emergency. Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia are all dealing with historic wildfire activity driven by a combination of below-average winter snowpack and extreme summer heat. Oregon has been hit particularly hard, with total acreage lost to wildfires this season approaching two million acres. Experts quoted in original reporting believe Oregon may surpass the record set in 2024, making this the most damaging wildfire year in the state’s modern history.
The Washington National Guard has been mobilised to assist with traffic management and logistical support. In a Facebook post, the Guard stated: ‘We are rapidly mobilising units of the Washington National Guard tonight to help assist the City of Spokane and Spokane County with their horrific wildfire situation. We’re also pulling together a general purpose manpower pool that can be made immediately available to local authorities as additional requirements emerge over the coming days. The Washington National Guard is all in on this fight.’
Winds, which had maintained dangerous intensity overnight, finally dropped to between five and 15 miles per hour by early Sunday morning, giving firefighters more manageable conditions on the ground.
Industry professionals with clients holding Spokane-area bookings should contact their carriers directly regarding rebooking options. Those wishing to support relief efforts can direct clients to the United Ways of the Pacific Northwest, which operates a standing Disaster Relief Fund established in 2020 and designed specifically to distribute aid rapidly to communities affected by Pacific Northwest wildfires.
