Outer-layer damage on a multilayer system
United stated that the damage affected the outer layer of the aircraft’s multilayer windshield assembly. The carrier noted that 787 windshields are constructed in multiple layers specifically so the assembly can continue to function if any single layer is compromised, and confirmed the aircraft remained safe to operate throughout the diversion. The cause of the cracking had not been determined at the time of the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the crew reported the cracked windshield before landing and said the agency is investigating. The FAA did not indicate a timeline for completing that investigation.
The flight was cancelled after arriving in Boston. United arranged alternate transportation for affected passengers and provided hotel accommodation, meal vouchers and compensation. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft remained on the ground in Boston following the incident.

The 10 August event is the second operational disruption on the same Washington-to-Munich pairing within roughly a year. In July 2025, a United 787 operating the identical route returned to Dulles after the crew reported a left engine failure shortly after take-off; that aircraft landed safely following a fuel dump.
The United 787 windshield diversion also follows a comparable event involving a KLM Boeing 787-9 in February 2025, when the captain’s front windshield cracked during descent and the aircraft landed safely in Costa Rica. That incident similarly affected a single layer of the windshield structure without precipitating loss of control or injury.
The 787’s windshield architecture, in which multiple bonded layers provide redundancy, is a design feature common across modern widebody types. Cracking confined to the outer pane is treated by operators as a controllable defect rather than an immediate airworthiness emergency, which is consistent with United’s decision to continue to Boston rather than declare a higher-category emergency. The FAA’s investigation will be the mechanism for determining whether a maintenance finding, a manufacturing defect or an environmental factor was responsible.
Passenger disruption and aircraft status
For the 175 passengers who boarded at Dulles expecting to arrive in Munich, the diversion translated into an overnight stay. United’s provision of hotel rooms, meal vouchers and compensation follows standard carrier practice for a technical diversion deemed within the airline’s control, though the carrier made no public statement on whether the passengers would be eligible for additional statutory compensation under applicable regulations.
