In a significant move, Amadeus has successfully completed the €320 million acquisition of Vision-Box, a leader in biometric and automated border control technologies.

The completion of this acquisition amplifies Amadeus’s capabilities in providing seamless, end-to-end travel solutions by integrating advanced biometric systems into its portfolio.

Amadeus’s acquisition of Vision-Box marks a strategic enhancement in integrating biometric technologies into travel solutions. This acquisition, initially announced in January, has now received all necessary regulatory approvals, signifying a robust move forward.

By incorporating Vision-Box’s cutting-edge biometric technology, Amadeus aims to optimise the traveller’s journey from booking to boarding, thus enhancing efficiency and security in travel operations.

Vision-Box, headquartered in Lisbon, specialises in aviation biometrics and automated border control. It has been a key player in the industry since its founding in 2001.

The firm recorded a revenue of €70 million and an operating profit of €20 million in 2023, reflecting its strong market position and operational proficiency.

The acquisition ensures that Vision-Box’s experienced team, including CEO Miguel Leitmann, becomes an integral part of Amadeus’ operations.

Leitmann will now report directly to Decius Valmorbida, President of Travel at Amadeus, ensuring strategic alignment and continuity in leadership.

With 470 employees joining its ranks, Amadeus strengthens its expertise in biometrics and border control, enhancing its comprehensive service offerings.

The market for automated border control is projected to grow significantly, from $48 billion in the previous year to an anticipated $86 billion by 2028. This growth underlines the importance of Amadeus’s investment.

Valmorbida highlighted the acquisition as ‘deeply complementary’ to Amadeus’s existing offerings, aligning well with current travel technology needs and enhancing its competitive edge.

Since 2015, Vision-Box has been majority-owned by the private equity fund Keensight Capital, indicating substantial backing and confidence in its business model.

This change in ownership represents a shift towards further integration and innovation within the travel technology sector, driven by Amadeus’s resources and strategic vision.

The deal underscores Amadeus’s commitment to technological innovation by expanding its portfolio with Vision-Box’s advanced biometrics solutions.

By bringing new levels of biometric interoperability between airports, airlines, and border control, the acquisition facilitates a seamless travel experience.

This integration not only supports enhanced traveller convenience but also fortifies security measures across the international travel landscape.

With regulatory approvals secured, Amadeus officially concludes this strategic transaction, setting the stage for future advancements.

The acquisition of Vision-Box positions Amadeus at the forefront of the travel technology industry, ready to deliver innovative solutions across global markets.

In summary, the acquisition of Vision-Box by Amadeus exemplifies a strategic commitment to enhancing travel technologies through integrated biometric solutions.

As the landscape of automated border control continues to evolve, this merger positions Amadeus to lead with innovation and improved traveller experiences.
