easyJet, a UK-based airline, is set to start new flights from London Southend Airport to the popular Canary island, Tenerife.

With its spectacular beaches and constant sunshine, Tenerife will now be within a four-hour flight direct from London Southend Airport for £33.49 one way including taxes.

Available for sale effective September 24, 2013, the inaugural flight is set to take off on December 13, 2013. Over 11,000 passengers per year are expected to benefit from the new twice-weekly services each Tuesday and Friday between the South East’s newest airport and Tenerife.

Famed for their volcanic origins and beaches of fine sand, the Canary Islands enjoy regular sunny days and an attractive climate with minimal rainfall and constant mild temperature all through the year. The Islands consist of seven larger islands – Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro – and a few smaller ones, including Alegranza, Graciosa, Montana Clara and Lobos.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s UK commercial manager, said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to be launching our 16th destination from London Southend to Tenerife. It’s perfect for winter sun and we’re sure it will be a big hit with our customers from Southend and the wider region.

‘We have doubled the number of easy and affordable destinations available from London Southend since we launched at the airport in April 2012 to ensure that there really is an ideal destination for everyone whether travelling on business or for leisure, all year round.’

David Lister, operations director, added: ‘We are really pleased that Tenerife is being added to the easyJet destinations offered here at London Southend Airport – recently voted Best Airport in the UK by Which? We are convinced it is going to prove hugely popular as it is without doubt the one our customers have been asking us for the most.

‘Having just experienced our busiest ever summer with more than 230,000 people travelling through the airport, it is fantastic that this much-loved winter sun island is being made accessible from London Southend and enabling our customers to top up their tans through the colder months.’

The new service comes after easyJet recently announced its expansion at London Southend Airport with the addition of a fourth aircraft to the base and three new routes to Newquay, Berlin and Krakow. With a substantial presence on Europe’s top 100 routes, easyJet claims to operate Europe’s largest air transport network.
