Heathrow showcases career options at Skills London

Heathrow has showcased the range of roles and career options available at the airport at Skills London, the capital’s largest careers event.

At the event, held on November 22nd and 23rd, Heathrow demonstrated the different roles available at the airport and also highlighted the employment programmes available in the five local boroughs, including the Heathrow Academy. Besides the Economic Development and HR teams, apprentices also participated in the event to give their perspective and experiences on working at Heathrow.

Heathrow’s economic development manager, Sundeep Sangha, said, ‘We were really pleased to see so many enthusiastic young people come to see us at Skills London. It’s been an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the variety of careers available at Heathrow and we want to continue to get local young people involved with the airport. At Heathrow we want to recruit the very best talent as we aim to make Heathrow Europe’s hub airport of choice.’

Skills London had 35,000 potential jobs on offer to young people aged between 15 and 24.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: ‘Skills London is a truly fantastic event which I’m proud to support. It gives young Londoners the chance to come face-to-face with potential employers, try out new things and get their foot on the career ladder. With thousands of jobs available, it’s full of great opportunities.’

Separately, Heathrow said that Kevan Jones, MP for North Durham and shadow defence minister, is undergoing his Industry and Parliament Trust Fellowship, which brings together senior members of Parliament and industry.

Fellowships are tailor-made placements in industry for MPs, MEPs and peers, structured on a set of learning objectives decided by each parliamentarian at the beginning of their programme. Jones has completed three days of his fellowship so far, focusing on civil aerospace and aviation. Following an educational ‘access all areas’ tour of Heathrow Airport, he will now focus on learning more about aircraft, aviation and manufacturing.

‘I travel regularly through Heathrow as a passenger, but it is a great experience being able to witness first-hand what it takes to keep this hugely complex operation running.

‘Heathrow is like a mini city, and having the opportunity to go behind the scenes at the airport has really added to my understanding and appreciation of civil aviation and aerospace. I was particularly impressed by the new Terminal 2.’
