London Gatwick Airport has responded to a consultation held by the Department for Transport with regards to the combination of the Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern rail franchise. The combined franchise will be expected to operate from September 2013. Destination weddings are gaining favour with British couples, with increasing numbers opting to hold their wedding ceremonies abroad. With the cost of weddings increasing in UK, exotic locations are appearing to offer better value, and the lure of sunshine and white sand is proving difficult to ignore for the romantically inclined. CityJet, an Ireland-based airline, has announced that it is terminating its service from Manchester airport to Antwerp, in Belgium. The route, which is the only Cityjet service from Manchester Airport in the UK, and the only non-stop service between Manchester and Antwerp, will be terminating on September 17, 2012. Cityjet has been serving the route six times per week using Fokker 50 aircraft, but the decision has been taken due to viability issues. Around 1.8 million British travellers are expected to head overseas for the August Bank Holiday weekend, which runs from August 24 to 27, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), a UK-based travel agency association. Investors have put more money into CouchSurfing, a website that claims to connect travellers with people overseas that are willing to share their home or facilities. The company raised $15m recently, taking the amount of funds raised in the past year to $22.6m. The Malaysian tourism department has announced that it has launched a smart phone application to help tourists in certain areas of the nation to get around more easily. Tourism Malaysia, the Malaysian tourism authority, has said that the application, a free smart phone application called Malaysia Amaze-Ya!, will help travellers to reach key destinations in the nation with the maximum of and the minimum hassle. The Brecon Beacons, a national park in Wales, has launched an electric buggy service to transport visitors. The park has become the first in the UK to allow tourists to travel using a fleet of eco-friendly electric buggies. The low-energy vehicles may be used to explore the national park and visit various places of interest. Six vehicles have been provided for the eco-friendly traveller, all supplied by Renault.
