A conservation group is buying up grassland in Montana, USA, with the intention of returning it to its natural state. Tourists and conservationists have long been attracted to eastern Montana’s prairie, and have often been at odds with cattle ranchers for whom the area’s nature and conservation is of secondary importance to their business interests. The grasslands, which have been such a hit with eco tourists, were often marred by thousands of miles of fences that were erected to fence in cattle. Philanthropists and conservationists are now pulling down the fences and returning the grasslands to their natural state. The…
Sun lovers, skiers and cruise fans might all need to vacate these shores to discover their ideal holiday, but what the UK has in abundance are opportunities for the serious walker. A serious walker is someone who rises early and, after a hearty breakfast in a local hostelry, sets off to walk until early evening, stopping only to eat their packed lunch and to admire the view. Undeterred by inclement weather or an arduous path, the serious walker lives for the wide-open spaces and the anticipation of the panorama that awaits them over the next rise. A must have notch…

CheapFlightsFinder, a UK-based comparison site that assesses the cheap flight data from 16 metasearch engines, has announced that in their opinion, British travellers that use just one search engine when planning a summer vacation, may not necessarily be provided with the best available deal. The website has warned British travellers that flight comparison websites may not offer the best deal as different flight comparison websites offer different bargain prices, making for a confusing choice. While one flight comparison website may offer a London to Malaga fare with a best price of £229 per person on August 29, 2012, another similar…
Travelodge, a US-based budget hotel chain, is to shed a number of its UK properties. The hotel chain is to shed up to 10 percent of its 500 properties in the UK, and intends to reduce its rent bills on another 100 or so. The rationalisation comes in the wake of the group’s previous owners, Dubai International Capital, handing over control of Travelodge to US bankers, Goldman Sachs, and US hedge funds Golden Tree Asset Management and Avenue Capital, in a debt for equity swap. Most of the 500 properties in question are not owned by the company, but rented,…
Four major airlines in the UK have set aside their business rivalry and have jointly commissioned a survey into Air Passenger Duty and its impact on the country’s economy. The four companies, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Ryanair and Easyjet first came together under the ‘Axe the Tax’ slogan last year, but have now stepped up their campaign by appointing Pricewaterhouse Coopers, a UK accountancy firm, to investigate the economic effects of the increased duty on the British economy. The airline industry in the UK is unanimous in its condemnation of the tax, which increased by 8 percent at the beginning…
Travel sized toiletries that are popular with tourists because of their space saving convenience can in fact be costing them many times the price of the same products in their standard sizes. According to research that has been reported in the Daily Mail, airport shops are charging holidaymakers up to eight times the price for toiletries in miniature packs, when compared to what they would have paid for a regular sized bottle at a supermarket. Airport shops are cashing in on the popularity of miniature toiletries since the authorities introduced a 100ml limit on fluids and pastes in hand luggage…
A consortium of experts from Scotland and Sweden claims to have struck a blow against one of the biggest drawbacks to visiting sunny foreign climes, sunburn. Every year, thousands of poorly prepared holidaymakers succumb to the painful and potentially dangerous effects of soaking up too much sun, not only abroad, but also on those rare sunny intervals in the UK. Now, researchers from the University of Strathclyde, in Scotland, have teamed up with Swedish organisation, Intellego Technologies, to create a wristband that warns sunbathers when they are about to enter the danger zone. The paper wrist monitor changes colour when…
