He founded his own country in the desert after an epic trip around the world

There’s a certain allure in venturing off the beaten track, and one man truly embraced that spirit. After an extensive world travel experience that allowed him to explore countless cultures and landscapes, a former DJ from San Diego took a bold leap: he created his own micronation. This self-proclaimed sovereign state, known as the Republic of Slowjamastan, is set in the heart of a vast desert in California—a place where dreams of independence meet the arid beauty of nature.

Welcome to Slowjamastan, the 194th Country

After journeying through nearly every corner of the globe, Williams, the audacious founder and self-titled Sultan of Slowjamastan, decided that the world was missing one more country. On a legal note, he acquired around 11 acres of land from private developers, and in a ceremonious declaration at exactly 12:26 PM on December 1, 2021, he announced the creation of his new nation. Setting up a makeshift government office in his self-designated capital, Dublândia, he proclaimed independence from the United States. I remember a time when I craved a fresh start after long travels, and his commitment to carving out a personal nation-building experience resonated with that same hunger for adventure.

According to CNN Travel, his micronation now claims nearly 500 registered citizens, with more than 4,500 people eagerly awaiting the chance to join this new state. Such numbers underscore the magnetic pull of his unconventional project, proving that sometimes, the dream of a new beginning is irresistible.

    A Republic with Unconventional Laws

Every sovereign state is defined by its laws, and in Slowjamastan, those rules are as unique as the nation itself. Williams has introduced a range of unconventional laws that add an eccentric twist to everyday life. For instance, wearing Crocs is strictly forbidden—a rule that sparks curiosity and conversation. There are also odd regulations such as prohibiting passengers from placing their feet on a vehicle’s dashboard; if caught, the offender must clean the vehicle and is barred from riding for 30 days. Another quirky statute bans the wearing of underwear, boldly displayed on a sign in Latin that reads “Numquan ubi sub ubi.” These laws, while humorous, serve as a playful critique of societal conventions and hint at the founder’s desire to challenge the status quo.

    Embracing a Dictatorship Persona

Williams doesn’t shy away from embracing a dictatorial persona. Clad in his signature green uniform and surrounded by a dedicated security team, he loves to pose for photos and deliver dramatic speeches that mix theatrics with real political ambition. This bold approach is reminiscent of historical cult of personality figures, yet it’s clear that his actions are filled with a healthy dose of satire and personal expression. His aim is not only to create a new country but also to shine a light on the absurdities found in traditional governance.

With ambitions for global recognition, Williams is aligning his country’s framework with standards outlined in the Convention of Montevideo—a set of criteria that includes the capacity to engage in diplomatic relations. Despite his creative outreach efforts, including numerous messages to prominent figures like President Biden via social media, international acknowledgment remains an ongoing challenge.

In the end, whether Slowjamastan is seen as a genuine political experiment, a form of creative self-expression, or simply an epic personal adventure, it undeniably captures the imagination. For those enchanted by the idea of starting over in an uncharted desert realm and pursuing a revolutionary journey into nationhood, the story of the Republic of Slowjamastan is a fascinating glimpse into the world of modern micronations and the endless possibilities of independent thinking.
