    The story sounded clean and nearly reassuring for decades. Life followed the rise of oxygen. Simple cells gave way to complex organisms, whose bodies solidified into limbs and shells and whose movements became conscious and obvious. The presentation was akin to turning on a light switch in a pitch-black room. However, there is a growing sensation that the light never really came on when one is standing in climate-controlled fossil archives, where pieces of old seabeds rest peacefully inside drawers with labels.

    According to new research, oxygen levels did not abruptly settle during the Cambrian explosion, when life diversified into odd and familiar forms. They wavered. Going up. Dropping. Never completely trustworthy. It’s probable that early animals were reacting to stress rather than ease. The story’s emotional tone shifts as a result.

Even in popular culture, oxygen is seen as essential to life. Oxygen is transformed into a countdown clock and a gauge of time itself in the Netflix movie Oxygen, in which a woman awakens to find herself locked in a pod with limited air. However, steady countdowns were not available in the Cambrian oceans. They provided uncertainty.

    Because they lacked the biochemical complexity of contemporary animals, early species managed to survive in environments with continuously fluctuating oxygen levels. Their bodies changed to fit. Their metabolisms adapted. Evolution shifted its focus from waiting to improvising. Marks from the improvisation can still be seen today.

    Certain worms and crustaceans are examples of contemporary marine species that can withstand low oxygen levels. These powers may have existed for hundreds of millions of years, according to scientists. The robustness of life today may still be shaped by survival techniques evolved during periods of ancient upheaval. The way this reframes human assumptions is difficult to ignore.

    Life has frequently been described as a journey toward stability and perfect circumstances. However, this new perspective implies that complexity might have been driven by instability itself. Patience was not rewarded by evolution. It was a reaction to unease.

    This alters the Cambrian explosion’s meaning. The word “explosion” connotes a dramatic event, a sudden discharge. However, the reality seems more brittle as it is gradually exposed by chemical evidence. Not so sure. Perhaps less cinematic, but more unpredictable and human.

    By looking at these hints, scientists aren’t completely rewriting evolution. However, they are changing the tone. There were no placid blue cradles in the waters where life first began to develop. They were unstable settings that required adaptation due to their frequent change. It wasn’t because conditions improved that creatures survived, but rather because they didn’t.
