In 2023, the cruise industry experienced an extraordinary surge in popularity among UK and Irish holidaymakers, reaching record-breaking numbers. New data reveals a significant increase, demonstrating the sector’s growing appeal.
According to recent CLIA findings, holidaymakers from the UK and Ireland embarked on an impressive 2.3 million cruise holidays in 2023. This figure not only marks a significant milestone but also surpasses the previous highest annual tally by approximately 600,000 passengers.
The data highlights the Mediterranean as the leading destination, drawing 35% of cruise travellers, followed by Northern Europe at 29%, and the Caribbean at 12%. This trend underscores the diverse appeal of cruise vacations, catering to a variety of preferences.
Interestingly, the average age of UK and Ireland cruisers has slightly decreased to 55.1 years, down from 56.1 years in 2022. This shift indicates a subtle but noteworthy trend towards attracting a younger demographic.
Furthermore, cruise lengths have increased, with the average holiday extending to 10.1 days compared to the previous 9.8 days. This extension reflects holidaymakers’ desire for more immersive travel experiences.
Exploration-themed cruises have seen a substantial rise in interest, with passenger numbers increasing by 53% year-on-year. This growth suggests a burgeoning interest in more adventurous and unique travel experiences.
The data shows that 28% of cruisers are part of multigenerational parties, involving three or more age groups. This highlights the industry’s capacity to accommodate diverse family dynamics.
Additionally, nearly two-thirds of passengers opted for a pre-cruise stay at their departure destination, while 52% extended their holiday with a post-cruise stay. These choices enhance overall travel satisfaction.
Looking ahead, the cruise industry exhibits promising prospects. Over 300 ships are scheduled to operate this year, marking the first instance where the global CLIA member fleet has surpassed this count. This expansion signifies a 3.6% increase in overall capacity.
CLIA UK’s Managing Director, Andy Harmer, emphasised the sector’s resilience and adaptability, noting that ‘Cruise continues to lead the way in travel’ and offers versatile holiday solutions both on and off the ship.
A survey involving 4,500 international holidaymakers revealed a positive mindset towards cruises. An impressive 82% of cruise passengers expressed their intention to take another sea holiday, reflecting a 3% rise since 2019.
Moreover, 71% of non-cruisers showed openness towards future sea travel, indicating a growing interest in trying out cruise vacations.
This sentiment underscores the appeal of cruises as an attractive holiday choice, catering to various preferences and budgets.
Earlier reports from CLIA indicated a robust start to the year, with a record-breaking first quarter. Membership rose by 4%, reflecting the industry’s recovering momentum post-pandemic.
Such growth signifies the increasing reliance on cruise travel as a staple in the tourism sector, attracting both returning and new holidaymakers.
The cruise industry’s commitment to sustainability is evident, with more than 300 ships now operating globally, aiming for greener travel solutions. This dedication to environmental responsibility is pivotal for future success.
