The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) UK is urging the next UK government to intensify its support for sustainable practices within the cruise industry.
During the 2024 Cruise Summit in London, CLIA UK’s managing director, Andy Harmer, emphasised the need for accelerated sustainability efforts, highlighting the critical importance of government intervention to enhance infrastructure and alternative fuel availability.
In a compelling appeal, Andy Harmer outlined the cruise industry’s pressing need for government-backed initiatives. Harmer identified the availability of alternative fuels and robust port infrastructure as crucial growth areas. He asserted that to match the strides made by Europe, the UK must prioritise these areas following the upcoming General Election. “We need the right fuels in the right places,” Harmer stressed.
Despite this awareness, the impact on booking decisions remains limited. Cruise agents report that while customers appreciate sustainability, they still prioritise factors such as price and destination. It reflects a gap in the perceived value versus the cost of more sustainable options.
Sergeant proposed that the industry should enhance its messaging and make sustainability initiatives more visible and actionable to consumers. This involves not only promoting advancements in plastic use reduction and shore power connectivity but also ensuring these measures are communicated effectively to potential customers.
However, there is consensus that more needs to be done. By adopting cutting-edge technologies and innovative practices, the industry can continue reducing its carbon footprint and setting a global standard for sustainability.
The cruise sector requires a collective effort to educate both agents and the public about sustainable practices, involving all stakeholders in the development of environmentally friendly itineraries.
Harmer reiterated the call for government action, arguing that the upcoming government plays a crucial role in facilitating a functional, sustainable maritime industry.
The cruise industry stands at a crucial juncture where sustainability is not just a trend but an imperative. The sector’s future success relies on strategic collaborations, technological innovation, and unwavering government support.
Enhancing sustainability within the cruise sector requires an integrated approach involving stakeholders at all levels. The call for government support underscores the industry’s commitment to embracing eco-friendly practices, setting a foundation for future growth and responsibility.
