Cornwall Airport Newquay has been honoured with the top prize in the Small Airport category at the AirportsUK Health & Safety Week Awards 2024. The award ceremony recognised the airport’s outstanding efforts in ensuring the health and safety of its passengers and staff.

The annual awards, sponsored by Leidos and supported by both the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), celebrate the best health and safety initiatives at airports across the country. Cornwall Airport Newquay secured victory in its category, while Farnborough Airport was highly commended.

This accolade follows the UK Airports Health and Safety Week, which took place earlier this year from 13th to 19th May. Cornwall Airport Newquay’s winning submission highlighted initiatives in three key areas: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Working at Height, and Airside Environment Safety, all contributing to its recognition as a safety leader.

Andrew Boomer, Operations Director at Cornwall Airport Newquay, expressed his pride in the achievement: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this prestigious award. Health and safety are paramount in everything we do, and this accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. At Cornwall Airport Newquay, we strive to create a safe and secure environment for all our passengers, staff, and partners, and it’s fantastic to see those efforts recognised on a national level.”

Baroness Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, Chair of AirportsUK, congratulated the winners and emphasised the importance of safety across the sector: “The health and safety of passengers, staff, and local communities is the number one priority for airports across the country. These Health and Safety Awards highlight the ongoing commitment of our airports to creating healthier, safer aviation environments. Congratulations to all of the winners and those who were highly commended.”

Neil Gray from the CAA, co-chair of the judging panel, commended the quality of this year’s entries: “These were extremely difficult decisions this year, with amazing entries from airports all over the UK. Airports are key parts of the country’s infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of passengers and employees is the highest priority.”

Cornwall Airport Newquay’s team remains dedicated to maintaining and exceeding these safety standards, ensuring that the airport not only serves as a vital gateway to the world but also leads the way in providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
