Holidays are so important to the British public that they will make whatever sacrifices are needed in order to afford them, according to a survey reported in the Daily Mail.

The survey said that as many as 65 percent of respondents had admitted to sacrificing meals out, shopping for cheaper groceries, not buying new clothes, cancelling buying presents for their partner’s special occasion, and even selling their belongings on eBay in order to fund their all-important holiday. It also revealed that 49 percent of those questioned are hoping to save money and improve the quality of their holiday by not booking until the last minute, with the intention of getting a better deal.

41 percent of holidaymakers are planning to holiday in the UK according to a survey carried out by Travelodge, a 6 percent increase on last year’s figure, and 48 percent intend to increase their domestic breaks from the three that they took last year, to four this year.

Traditional seaside breaks are favoured by 30 percent of adults, a further 30 percent will be taking a UK city break, a countryside trip appeals to 25 percent, with only 10 percent planning a theme park holiday.

In order of popularity, the top 10 UK destinations for the coming year are Cornwall, Edinburgh, the Lake District, London, the Scottish Highlands, Devon, North Wales, Glasgow, the Yorkshire Dales and Blackpool, while Great Yarmouth and Scarborough, which were nine and 10 respectively last year, have slipped out of this year’s list.
