TripAdvisor, an online travel community offering user-generated travel information, has announced its TripIndex 2012 for travellers.

The TripAdvisor TripIndex is priced in British pounds and includes the cost of one night for a couple in a four-star hotel, including accommodation, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, and return taxi transportation.

For the summer months until August 31, 2012, Hanoi, in Vietnam offers the most affordable travel for British travellers, with a TripIndex cost of £89.93. With the huge hype around the cost of London accommodation for the 2012 Olympics Games, the city tops the list of most expensive cities with a TripIndex cost of £330.45.

While the least expensive average hotel room is found in Bangkok, in Thailand, for £51.68 per night, the most expensive hotel room title again goes to London, at £230.39 per night.

Emma Shaw, the spokesperson for TripAdvisor, said, ‘TripIndex helps travellers to see where their pound goes the furthest. The list shows that many Asian cities, along with some European cities – like Warsaw and Sofia – are very affordable once you’re on the ground. Some cities traditionally considered expensive – like London, Paris and New York – actually cost three times more than the cheaper cities in the list for an evening out.’

The cheapest cities for British travellers are in South East Asian destinations of Hanoi, in Vietnam, at £54.08 per night; Beijing, in China, at £67.72; Bangkok, in Thailand, at £51.68; followed by Budapest, in Hungary at £66.58; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at £72.32.
