Etihad Airways announces fourth year-round daily service to London Heathrow

Etihad Airways has said that it will expand its services from Abu Dhabi to London Heathrow by adding a fourth year-round daily service between the two capitals, launching on October 27, 2019.

The new service adds a mid-morning departure from Abu Dhabi and a late evening departure from London Heathrow. The move follows the introduction of additional seasonal services this summer.

Robin Kamark, Commercial Officer, Etihad Aviation Group Chief, said: ‘The flagship Abu Dhabi to London route is tremendously popular with point-to-point business and leisure travellers, and those transiting beyond our hub and we recently boosted frequencies between the two cities to meet increased demand at peak travel times. Adding a fourth year-round flight will provide much needed capacity and optimised timings and easy connections to key destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia.

‘The new service demonstrates our commitment to the crucially important UK market, and ensures we provide our customers with all the benefits of a next-generation fleet across all 42 weekly departures to and from the United Kingdom.’

Etihad Airways said that it will introduce a next-generation, two-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on one of its four daily London services. The aircraft is configured with 299 seats – 28 Business Studios and 271 Economy Smart Seats. The new service complements the three other services which are operated by Etihad’s 486-seat Airbus A380s, which feature The Residence, a luxurious three-room cabin, nine private First Apartments, 70 Business Studios and 405 Economy Smart Seats. These include 80 Economy Space seats with a seat pitch of up to 36 inches.

In addition to the four daily flights to London Heathrow, Etihad Airways also operates two daily Boeing 787 Dreamliner services between Abu Dhabi and Manchester.

Etihad Holidays launches services in UK

Etihad Holidays, a division of Etihad Airways, has said that it is planning to launch in the UK as it seeks to serve the increasing leisure travel demand to Abu Dhabi, one of its key global markets, Asia and the Indian Ocean.

Etihad Holidays’ first venture outside the Middle East, the UK service reflects its expertise in providing customers with the ideal package of accommodation, excursions, transfers and Etihad Airways flights.

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: ‘Etihad Holidays has expanded considerably in our home market and regionally, with popular retail centres across the UAE and preferred distribution partnerships in the Middle East. It is a proud moment to now take our established Holidays brand internationally to further boost growing tourism numbers into Abu Dhabi and the UAE and to ensure a growing market can benefit from our attractive range of packages.’

‘Etihad Airways has a strong customer base in the UK, using our three times a day service from Heathrow and double daily from Manchester as well as regions served by our codeshare partners, so international expansion of our Holidays operation to this market makes perfect sense,’ he added.

Etihad Holidays offers an extensive range of packages in the UAE, as the airline seeks to attract more business and leisure travellers to Abu Dhabi and the other emirates. The new operation provides fully secure and dynamic online booking of holiday packages and exclusive offers at the new website, www.etihadholidays.co.uk.

Prospective UK travellers can now book packages at a full range of hotels in Abu Dhabi city, Saadiyat Island, and Yas Island, with a comprehensive range of tours and excursions including desert safaris, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, as well as boat and ferry trips.

In addition to holidays in the UAE, Etihad also offers its UK customers more than 300 breaks in China, Malaysia, Maldives, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Etihad Airways has reported a successful festive holiday season, with January 3 and 4, 2013, reporting yet more of its busiest ever days, with 32,622 and 32,918 passengers flying each day respectively.

James Hogan, the airline president and chief executive officer, said, ‘It has been a busy start to 2013 for Etihad Airways and it is highly satisfying to beat our previous record for passengers carried in a single day.

Etihad Airways carried record numbers of passengers in 2012, was voted World’s Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year. Our challenge is to build on these achievements during the coming 12 months.’

Earlier, the airline had announced flying a total of 10.29 million passengers in 2012, an increase of 1.88 million passengers when compared to 2011.

The airline, which has recently acquired a stake of 3.96 percent in Virgin Australia Holdings, also owns a 2.99 percent holding in the Irish airline, Aer Lingus, and a 29 percent stake in Air Berlin, the second largest air carrier in Germany.

Etihad Airways Flies 10 Million Passengers in 2012

The airline is reporting a 22 percent increase in the total number of passengers carried in 2012, compared to a total of 8.41 million passengers that it carried in 2011. James Hogan, the airline president and chief executive officer, said, ‘Etihad Airways has achieved significant expansion in 2012 and therefore it’s very satisfying to pass our target of flying more than 10 million passengers during a year for the first time.

We have launched flights to six new destinations during the last year – Tripoli, Shanghai, Nairobi, Basra, Lagos, and Ahmedabad – which have all contributed to the 22 per cent increase in passenger numbers.’

Abu Dhabi launches global promotion of F1 Grand Prix

The Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority has kick-started a global campaign to promote the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, to be held in Abu Dhabi.

Travel News has reported that the promotional campaign, a global tour spanning seven countries, has been designed to attract the maximum number of tourists for the event, which is scheduled for November 2 to 4 at the Yas Marina Circuit. Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national carrier, is the event’s headline sponsor. Along with other sponsors, the firm is to use the tour to promote the event to international tourists.

The tour, a destination-themed summer programme, packs many international events into its itinerary and will allow tourists to visit the final two Volvo Ocean Race stopovers. Other important motor-sport events, specific to the countries that will be visited, will also be included in the travel plan. The tour is to cover the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, China, Australia and Russia. Many local motor-sport events in Abu Dhabi could also be added to the itinerary.

Other key Abu Dhabi sports sponsorships are already underway, including English Premier League Club, Manchester City’s summer tour of Asia, with TCA Abu Dhabi as the headline sponsor.

Nick McElwee, director of sales and marketing, Yas Marina Circuit, said, ‘Historically, one-in-five Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ticket-buyers have been non-UAE residents. This year, as part of collective efforts with key stakeholders to further build the event’s international profile, we have evolved our sales strategy to encompass wider destination marketing alongside generic race promotion.’

August sees 14% passenger growth at Abu Dhabi Airport

Abu Dhabi Airports Company today released the traffic report for Abu Dhabi International Airport for the month of August 2011, recording a robust 14% growth over last year’s figures with passenger traffic reaching 1.09 million. Cargo traffic was also on the rise reaching 39,841 tons, with an increase of 5% compared to the month of August 2011.

The double-digit growth recorded at Abu Dhabi International Airport during August is mainly attributed to the healthy growth of all airlines operating at the airport, while also supported by the Eid holiday. Being one of the fastest-growing airports in the region, Abu Dhabi has been growing by 12.2%, during the first 8 months of 2011.

James E. Bennett, Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports Company, commented: “The continuous increase of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s passenger traffic goes in parallel with the growth that the emirate is witnessing in trade, industry, and tourism. Up to August, we have welcomed 8,000,000 passengers through our airport, providing efficient and high-quality services. We continuously monitor the market and the travel trends to ensure that Abu Dhabi International Airport offers enhanced connectivity and an increased number of destinations and frequencies to all travellers.”

London, Jeddah, Doha, Bangkok, and Manila were the top five routes from Abu Dhabi International Airport during the month of August, generating 21% of the total passenger traffic at the capital’s airport. The top regions for the month were Far East, Middle East, and Europe with 37%, 25%, and 22% growth, respectively.
