Wizz Air announces major expansion at Doncaster Sheffield Airport

Wizz Air has announced the establishment of a new base at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which will be the second base for Wizz Air UK alongside London Luton.

The Hungarian low-cost airline said that it will allocate one Airbus A320 aircraft to the Yorkshire airport, and will launch seven new routes to add to its existing Doncaster Sheffield network of 10 routes. With the allocation of this aircraft, Wizz Air now has 11 aircraft permanently based in the UK, and the addition of these new routes from Doncaster Sheffield means Wizz Air has almost 1.8 million seats on sale on its 107 routes from the UK for the remainder of 2020.

With the creation of a new base at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Wizz Air will launch new connections to destinations including the Spanish cities of Alicante and Malaga, Larnaca in Cyprus, Faro in Portugal, Lublin in Poland, Kosice in Slovakia and Suceava in Romania. Tickets are available now on wizzair.com or the WIZZ mobile app, with fares starting from £17.99 one-way price.

Owain Jones, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK said: ‘The creation of our second base in the UK is a major milestone for Wizz Air UK, and testament to both our long term commitment to serving the UK market and the strength of the Wizz Air business model, as we continue to expand our footprint during this challenging time for the industry. We’re delighted to be introducing new low-fare connections to Doncaster Sheffield, to provide customers with opportunities to explore new cultures and cities, or return to their favourite holiday spots. The WIZZ team looks forward to welcoming customers old and new on-board our young and green fleet of Airbus aircraft very soon.’

Robert Hough, Chairman of Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: ‘We are delighted to bring more ultra-low fares to DSA, to these popular destinations loved by our customers and served by an airline who pride themselves on providing affordable travel, with an excellent reputation. With strong performance there is now a real possibility for the base to grow from one aircraft initially to a multi aircraft base further broadening the range of routes available.’

With the creation of a new Wizz Air UK base at Doncaster Sheffield, Wizz Air will increase the annual capacity of Doncaster Sheffield Airport by 150,000 seats. The creation of this new base follows on from Wizz Air’s recent announcements of new bases in Bacau, Dortmund, Lviv, Larnaca, Milan-Malpensa, Tirana, Saint Petersburg and the launch of over 200 new routes across the network since April 2020.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport announces new winter destination, Chambery

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has announced the Chambery in the Rhone-Alps region of south eastern France as the latest route in its Flybe winter programme, starting from December 17, 2016.

Given its proximity to Mont Blanc, Chambery – the gateway to a number of Alpine ski resorts – offers easy access to some of the finest slopes and facilities for the winter-sports lovers of Yorkshire. Chambery also offers increased tourism options being next to Lake Bourget, offering scenic views through walking routes as well being a historical city centre.

Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: ‘We are delighted to be adding a further destination to our Flybe winter programme in Chambery, coming swiftly on the back of announcing Dusseldorf to our new routes with Flybe. Being able to offer a winter sports destination as part of our winter programme is a great addition to our offer to customers alongside traditional getaway favourites like Alicante, Tenerife and Malaga.’

‘The new Flybe routes will offer an additional 500,000 seats and with growth from our incumbent airlines, we are predicting double-digit growth in 2016 with passenger figures rising to 1.35 million this year,’ added Gill.

Flybe’s chief revenue officer, Vincent Hodder, commented: ‘As Europe’s largest regional airline, we specialise in connecting the UK regions to Europe so we are pleased to add to our already extensive winter schedule from Doncaster Sheffield, these two additional routes to Dusseldorf and Chambery. We see them as a natural addition to our network from our new base and are confident that they will prove attractive options both for business travel and for winter getaways.’

With the new Chambery route and the recently announced Dusseldorf route, Flybe’s new base in Yorkshire at Doncaster Sheffield Airport will serve 10 winter destinations.

Starting December 17, 2016, flights to Chambery will operate once a week on Saturdays. Tickets are now available for booking, with one way fares available for booking at www.flybe.com from £44.99 including taxes and charges.

The new Dusseldorf service will operate four times a week with Amsterdam, Paris, Alicante and Malaga remaining unchanged for the winter and Berlin increasing to daily. Faro and Newquay will be replaced with the two new popular winter routes, while capacity to Jersey will reduce to three times weekly in winter, the airport said in its release.

Flybe announces new routes from Doncaster Sheffield Airport

Yorkshire’s Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has announced the launch of new Flybe flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle, and also announced a new business route to Dusseldorf that will be available for booking from March 31, 2016.

Part of a new eight-route deal between Flybe and the airport, the launch of the new routes will see the UK-based budget airline deliver the largest number of departures from the Yorkshire airport, offering some 42 extra flights per week. As part of the deal, nearly 500,000 extra new flight seats will be available to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Jersey, Newquay, Malaga, Alicante and Faro.

Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: ‘We are delighted to see the first Flybe flight taking passengers to Paris this morning. Our new motorway link road, Great Yorkshire Way, opened just in time for the new influx of passengers, making journeys to the airport much quicker and bringing six million people to within an hour’s drive.’

‘We are also delighted to announce that today (24 March) Flybe has strengthened its commitment with a further new route and expansion of its Berlin services. New flights to Dusseldorf are set to commence for the winter season. Services to Berlin will also increase from four weekly to daily, due to unprecedented demand from the Sheffield City regions business community.

‘Providing the Sheffield City Region with the business services it needs has long been an ambition and now that these services are here we must see the region voting with their feet and using them. Passenger demand to date has exceeded expectations. This is a phenomenal start but there is still much work to do,’ Gill added.

Vincent Hodder, chief revenue officer, Flybe said ‘Today is a day we have been working towards for a long time with eight brand new routes starting over the next few days from a brand new base – and we are delighted to announce details of yet another new route with a service to Dusseldorf. We are confident we have created a schedule that delivers attractive travel options that are both appealing and affordable as well as providing opportunities for onward global connections. Flybe prides itself on offering great value fares and a convenient, fast, reliable service to some very popular destinations. We look forward to welcoming all our new passengers on board.’

The new Embraer 195 jet aircraft that took off from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Paris on March 24, inscribed with ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ livery, will be used to promote the Yorkshire region to potential tourists across Europe and the UK. Under the new deal, Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Flybe were recently announced as the official airport and airline partner of the tourism agency respectively.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is expected to register double-digit growth in 2016, with the extra seats and growth from other carriers expected to take passenger figures from 900,000 in 2015 to 1.35 million in 2016, the airport said.
