Scandinavian Airlines to relaunch summer Bristol -Stockholm flights

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has said that it will relaunch its direct flights between Bristol and Stockholm for summer 2015, after the success of the first summer season in 2014.

The airline offers twice weekly flights on Friday and Mondays starting June 26, and to continue until August 14.

The flight-times are so scheduled that west country residents could take only a half day’s holiday to take a Swedish summer weekend break, with flights departing at 14.35 on Friday afternoons and arguably returning in time for work on Monday morning, arriving into Bristol at 08.40. Stockholm to Bristol flights are also available on the weekends for Swedish passengers departing at 12.25 on Friday afternoons to return on Monday by 12.50.

Shaun Browne, Aviation Director at Bristol Airport, said: ‘We’re delighted to welcome the return of SAS to Bristol Airport for summer 2015, following such strong bookings in 2014. Not only does the route offer an exciting destination option to west-country residents, but it also brings significant numbers of Scandinavian holidaymakers here too’.

David Jackson, Head of Marketing at Bath Tourism Plus said, ‘This is fantastic news for Bath and the wider region. Last summer we saw a significant increase in the number of visitors to Bath from Sweden thanks to these flights, so we’re looking forward to an equally successful service in 2015.’

Kathryn Davis, Head of Tourism at Destination Bristol added, ‘We are delighted that SAS will be returning to Bristol Airport for the summer following such a successful first year. There is a genuine interest in Bristol and Bath as short break destinations for Scandinavian visitors and the packed summer event programme during 2015 will give even more reasons to visit.’

The 2015 flights were announced after a successful first summer season for the routes in 2014. Prices start from £74 one way, or from £126 return on SAS Go, the airline’s economy service, which includes all taxes and charges, a checked bag at no extra cost, mobile check-in and seat selection, as well as on board services including newspapers, coffee and tea.

Scandinavian Airlines to start Bristol-Stockholm route in summer 2014

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and claimed to be the largest airline in Scandinavia, has announced a new service linking Bristol with Stockholm next summer, Bristol Airport said in a release.

Flights will operate twice a week, on Monday and Friday, from June 30 to August 15, 2014, using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The schedule, designed with long weekend leisure breaks, is expected to become popular with prospective travellers from both the UK and Sweden. For the last five years there have been no direct flight options from the South West of the UK to Stockholm.

Built on 14 islands, Stockholm is one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities. The Swedish capital, with its 750-year history and rich cultural life, will now be a new city break option for many travellers in the region.

The route is expected to generate over £1 million for the local visitor economy, with VisitEngland, Destination Bristol and Bath Tourism Plus supporting Bristol Airport and SAS in promoting the new service.

Hans Dyhrfort, SAS’s regional general manager for Western Europe, commented: ‘We are delighted to be launching a new summer route from Bristol to Stockholm. The Swedish capital is an amazing summer destination and is perfect both for a short city break or a longer stay.’

James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said: ‘This route not only gives Swedish visitors a great link to Bristol, it also provides convenient access to Bath, the Cotswolds and the rest of South West England. This fits with our focus on promoting regional airports as gateways to great English attractions outside London.’

Philippa Sutton, PR manager at Visit Sweden, said: ‘We are delighted SAS is launching a new route between Bristol and Stockholm. 2013 was a fantastic year for Stockholm with the opening of the Abba Museum in May, and the re-opening of the Vasa Museum in April, and we are expecting even more interest in the Swedish capital in 2014.’

Robert Sinclair, chief executive officer at Bristol Airport, said: ‘This is a great example of a direct service which not only improves connectivity for the South West, but brings valuable visitor spend to the tourism sector in this region as well. Today’s announcement by SAS also marks the return of this famous airline brand to the South West market after a five year absence.’

Bristol Airport is the UK’s fifth largest airport outside London and the ninth largest in the UK, handling 5.9 million passengers in 2012. In August 2013, the airport recorded the busiest month in its history, handling over 700,000 passengers.

BA to add flights from London City

UK national carrier, British Airways (BA), is set to further expand its operation from London City Airport with additional flights to Madrid and Stockholm.

BA Cityflyer will add a third daily flight to both cities starting from October 28, the beginning of the winter season. The move comes after BA said last month that it would launch a three-times daily service between London City and Dusseldorf. BA is also adding a new service from London City to Granada from July 25.

The additional services are both scheduled to depart London City at 12.50. The new return flight leaves Madrid at 13.25 to arrive in London at 14.40. The new flight to Stockholm Arlanda will leave London City at 12.50 and arrive in Sweden at 16.10. The extra return service departs from Stockholm at 13.30 and arrives in London at 14.55.

The existing two flights to Stockholm take-off at 0920 and 1840, while the other two flights to Stockholm Arlanda leave at 0930 and 1905.

‘The additional flights will both operate in the middle of the day, perfect timing for leisure travellers and giving even more choice for business customers,’ said BA.

Starting September 1, British Airways will also offer a three-times daily service operated by 50-seater Saab 2000 aircraft, leased from Eastern Airways in full British Airways livery. Flights will depart from London City at 0735, 1425 and 1855, with the return flights from Dusseldorf departing at 0635, 1315 and 1800.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways general manager commercial at London City, said at the time, ‘We have launched a number of new leisure routes from London City in the past couple of years. Now we are very excited to be going to a great business city like Dusseldorf which offers significant trade links with the city of London.’
