More than 1,700 hotels across 70 countries have joined a significant sustainability scheme initiated by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). This ambitious project encourages hotels to enhance their environmental efforts, marking a global shift towards sustainable tourism and hospitality practices.
The initiative, named ‘Hotel Sustainability Basics’, offers a straightforward framework for hotels to embark on their sustainability journey. By following a 12-step verification process, hotels aim to reduce carbon emissions, conserve nature, and positively impact local communities.
Prominent hotel groups from diverse regions—such as Jin Jiang, Louvre Hotel Group, Choice Hotels, and Radisson Hotel Group—are embracing this initiative. This collective participation underscores the hospitality industry’s commitment to a more sustainable future.
Alongside these hotels, travel brands like Intrepid and Abercrombie & Kent have also endorsed the programme. Such endorsements highlight the widespread recognition and support for the WTTC’s objectives.
WTTC president and chief executive Julia Simpson stated, “Our goal is to have a globally recognised trademark that shows customers at a glance that a hotel is supporting the planet by saving energy, cutting plastics, protecting nature, and supporting their local community.” The swift uptake of this scheme within a year is a testament to the industry’s eagerness for sustainable change.
The WTTC’s initiative reflects an industry-wide movement towards sustainability, aiming for a lasting positive impact.
