In light of recent developments, tourists and residents in Sri Lanka are on heightened alert for potential terrorist attacks. This warning follows recent advisories from multiple foreign offices and highlights specific concerns for areas frequented by international visitors.

    • The Foreign Office has identified hotels, tourist locations, and places of worship as potential targets, urging caution for travellers.
    • Following the US Embassy’s update, other nations like Israel and Australia have also issued warnings about travel to Sri Lanka.
    • There is credible information suggesting an increased threat level, particularly in the Arugam Bay area known for its popularity among surfers.
    • Authorities emphasise the importance of staying informed and vigilant, urging the public to adhere to local advice.

The Foreign Office has issued a serious warning to British tourists about the possible threat of terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka. These potential threats are described as ‘indiscriminate,’ underscoring the importance of caution in public spaces. Key areas of concern include hotels, tourist hotspots, and religious sites commonly visited by foreign nationals. The advisory urges individuals to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid crowded areas, and keep updated with local news.

This alert follows a travel advisory by the US Embassy in Colombo, which advised its citizens against visiting Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay area until further notice. This warning is based on credible intelligence pointing to potential attacks in the popular tourist region on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, prompting similar advisories from the Israeli and Australian governments.

The revised advisory highlights ongoing global tensions, particularly those stemming from the conflict in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, which have led groups like Al-Qaida and Daesh to possibly inspire further attacks worldwide. The guidance warns that such threats could be motivated by these conflicts, targeting Jewish and Muslim communities or the interests of Israel and its allies.

Given the volatile environment, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office strongly recommends that travellers maintain a high level of awareness, especially in areas known for their touristic or religious significance. The need to stay informed through local media and comply with local authorities’ guidance is emphasised.

Remaining cautious and prepared is crucial as tensions persist and threats evolve.
