Ponant advances sustainability efforts with a comprehensive three-pronged strategy, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.
- The ‘Blue Horizon’ objectives report an 11% reduction in CO2 emissions per cruise day from 2018 levels.
- Efforts include the use of biofuels, waste management innovations, and seawater filtration for onboard activities.
- Continuous support for marine ecosystem research is maintained with a budget increase in 2023.
- Ponant seeks to establish industry-leading sustainability practices through innovation and collaboration.
Ponant has taken significant strides in its environmental sustainability mission, employing a comprehensive strategy to address its ecological impact. The expedition line targets net-zero emissions by 2050, demonstrating its forward-thinking approach to environmental responsibility.
Central to Ponant’s sustainability strategy are the ‘Blue Horizon’ objectives, which reflect a proactive stance towards reducing operational CO2 emissions. The latest report revealed an 11% decrease in CO2 emissions per cruise day, a notable achievement when compared to 2018’s emissions levels. This progress is part of a larger commitment to leverage cutting-edge technologies in reducing the company’s environmental footprint.
A pivotal aspect of their strategy is the trial and certification of biofuels, described as generating 90% fewer CO2 emissions than traditional fossil fuels. With 12 vessels already certified, Ponant has established a foundation for achieving its long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. This initiative places Ponant at the forefront of sustainability efforts within the maritime industry.
In addition to reducing emissions, Ponant has implemented comprehensive waste management practices on its ships. All waste aboard is separated and sorted, and 73% of drinking water is now obtained through seawater filtration systems on 92% of their fleet. These actions have significantly reduced single-use plastics, saving over 20 tons fleet-wide.
Further supporting its environmental objectives, Ponant has increased its budget to €2.2 million in support of marine ecosystem research. This commitment will expand in 2025 to involve more vessels, reinforcing Ponant’s dedication to contributing to global scientific efforts focused on marine environmental changes and preservation.
Wassim Daoud, the company’s head of CSR and sustainability, encapsulated Ponant’s dedication by stating: “Although we are proud of our accomplishments, we acknowledge that the journey toward sustainable tourism is ongoing. Through innovation and collaboration, Ponant aims to set the highest industry standard for more accountable and transparent sustainability practices.”
Ponant continues to pioneer efforts in sustainable tourism, setting high standards for reducing environmental impact while supporting marine research.
