In a heartfelt gesture of appreciation, Sandals Resorts International’s executive chairman, Adam Stewart, extended thanks to the UK travel agents for their unwavering support following the passing of his father, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, in January 2021. This sentiment was expressed during an event commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Sandals Foundation, where Stewart highlighted the continuous backing from the UK trade.
At the event, held at Sandals’ luxury travel store on Fulham Road, London, it was revealed that the Sandals Foundation has significantly impacted the Caribbean islands by providing approximately $100 million in aid since its inception in March 2009. This support encompasses a range of initiatives, including environmental projects, community development, education, and health services.
Plans for a new fundraising challenge in St Vincent were also announced, following the success of last year’s 100km run in Antigua, which raised £100,000. The upcoming event aims to support paediatric healthcare, with Sandals Foundation executive director Heidi Clarke expressing hope that participants will once again surpass fundraising targets.
Unique Vacations’ managing director in the UK, Karl Thompson, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting travel agents through various measures such as commissions, incentives, and training. He emphasised that the relationship with agents is mutual, with trade sales representing a substantial portion of Sandals’ business.
Reflecting on Sandals’ business performance, Thompson noted that trade sales have remained robust in 2024, maintaining the momentum gained post-pandemic. He stated that current sales align with the exceptional figures of the previous year, surpassing pre-Covid-19 levels. During the anniversary event, a raffle and auction successfully raised around £15,000 for the Sandals Foundation.
Sandals Resorts International continues to thrive due to the steadfast support of UK travel agents, contributing significantly to both business success and philanthropic efforts in the Caribbean.
