Recent sightings of the northern lights across the UK have spurred a significant surge in interest for cruises to Iceland.

Iglu Cruise has observed a notable rise in search trends, reflecting a growing demand for this unique travel experience.

    Rising Popularity of Iceland Cruises

Iglu Cruise has reported a surge in interest for Iceland, possibly sparked by recent sightings of the northern lights across the UK. The cruise agency noted that Google Trends figures for searches made by Brits show a significant 40% year-on-year increase in cruises to Iceland during May.

Searches for “northern lights” increased by a staggering 9,900% compared to this time last year. According to Dave Mills, chief commercial officer at Iglu Cruise, “Demand for Iceland has been growing steadily in recent years. The northern lights, the blue lagoon, and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach are just some of the world-famous sights to witness in Iceland.”

    Comparative Growth Among European Destinations

Iceland topped the table for growth in searches this month among 24 European cruise destinations. Greece followed closely with a 32% increase in searches compared to last year.

Mills attributed the rising interest in Greece to its accessibility, with regular flights to popular locations such as Athens, Rhodes, and Corfu from major airports. He mentioned, “A cruise itinerary lends itself perfectly to Greek island hopping.”

    Steady Demand for Mediterranean Cruises

Search trends highlight an increase in interest for cruises to France (up by 16%) and Spain (up by 14%).

Mills commented, “Demand for Spain is consistent year-on-year, offering a wide variety of cruise types available all year round.”

Norway ranked fifth with a 9% increase in searches for cruises. Mills pointed out that the Norwegian fjords cruise season traditionally runs from May to September, and there is growing interest in winter cruises dedicated to observing the northern lights between November and March.

Unique Appeal of Northern Lights Cruises

The allure of witnessing the northern lights is a significant factor driving the popularity of Iceland and Norway cruises. These natural light displays offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience that many travellers find irresistible.

According to industry experts, winter cruises to Norway and Iceland specifically targeting the northern lights are becoming an integral part of cruise operators’ itineraries. This trend is expected to continue as more travellers seek unique and memorable travel experiences.

    Insights from Cruise Industry Experts

Dave Mills noted the importance of offering diverse and unique experiences to attract travellers. “The natural wonders of Iceland and Norway provide compelling reasons for travellers to choose these destinations,” he said.

He also emphasized the role of strategic marketing and accessible travel options in driving search trends and bookings. “Making these destinations accessible through regular flights and well-planned itineraries is crucial for sustaining interest and converting searches into bookings,” he added.

    Seasonal Trends and Future Projections

The seasonal nature of northern lights sightings affects travel patterns, with higher interest during peak times from November to March. This seasonality creates opportunities for cruise operators to develop targeted marketing strategies.

Mills suggests that the continued growth in searches and bookings for northern lights cruises indicates a long-term trend. “We anticipate sustained interest in northern lights cruises as more travellers become aware of this extraordinary experience,” he concluded.
