The Sovereign Cruise Club has continued its longstanding tradition of welcoming new Cunard vessels to their homeport. This year, the renowned cruise agent chartered a motor cruiser to greet the Queen Anne upon her arrival in Southampton.
Leading the initiative was Sovereign Cruise Club’s Managing Director, Stefan Shillito, who shared a memorable day at sea with VIP clients and members of both the Sovereign and Cunard teams. The event featured a champagne afternoon tea and a patriotic welcome for the Queen Anne’s maiden homeport arrival.
Continuing a Storied Tradition
The Sovereign Cruise Club has a rich history of being among the first to welcome Cunard’s new ships. This tradition, upheld since the maiden arrival of Queen Mary 2 in Southampton on Boxing Day 2003, was reprised this week with the welcoming of the Queen Anne.
Managing Director Stefan Shillito emphasised the significance of this tradition. “We were the first boat to welcome Queen Anne as she loomed out of the mist looking magnificent and we had our Union Jacks waving and our patriotic music to make an amazing atmosphere,” he said.
A Grand Welcome in Southampton
Shillito and his team chartered a motor cruiser from Southampton and headed to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Accompanied by VIP clients and members of the Cunard team, they enjoyed a champagne afternoon tea before returning to sea to greet the Queen Anne.
The anticipation built as the Queen Anne approached. The ship, spotting the welcoming party, sounded her whistle in salute, creating an unforgettable moment for all on board.
Memorable Experiences on Board
The celebrations continued as guests had the opportunity to join the Queen Anne for an overnight showcase. This exclusive experience provided insight into the ship’s luxurious offerings and onboard amenities.
“It’s been such a wonderful few days both welcoming the ship in and spending a lovely day and evening on board,” commented Shillito, reflecting on the event’s success.
Honouring Previous Welcomes
Sovereign Cruise Club has a tradition of welcoming Cunard’s vessels. Beyond Queen Mary 2, the club greeted Queen Victoria in 2007 and Queen Elizabeth in 2010. They also chartered a boat for an emotional farewell to the QE2 in 2008.
This consistent participation in significant milestones underscores Sovereign Cruise Club’s commitment to celebrating maritime history and the enduring partnership with Cunard.
A Symbol of Patriotism
The event included patriotic elements such as waving Union Jacks and playing traditional British music. These touches not only added to the festive atmosphere but also highlighted the connection between Cunard’s storied past and bright future.
Shillito noted, “A highlight was when she spotted us and sounded her whistle in salute.” This gesture from the Queen Anne was met with cheers, marking a successful welcome ceremony.
VIP Client Engagement
Inviting VIP clients to this event was a strategic move. It allowed Sovereign Cruise Club to strengthen relationships with key stakeholders while showcasing their dedication to unparalleled service.
The champagne afternoon tea and the opportunity to board the Queen Anne were exclusive experiences that reinforced the club’s reputation for excellence.
Looking Ahead
As Queen Anne settles into her homeport, the anticipation for her journey with passengers grows. This vessel is expected to offer unique voyages that continue Cunard’s legacy of luxury and sophistication.
The welcoming event sets a high standard for future introductions, reflecting both Sovereign Cruise Club’s and Cunard’s commitment to exceptional maritime experiences.
The Sovereign Cruise Club’s charter to welcome the Queen Anne cements their role in celebrating pivotal moments in maritime history. This event not only honoured past traditions but also highlighted a continued commitment to excellence.
