London Underground to Close Parts of Central Line for Maintenance

Those travellers intending to use the London Underground on routes that involve Grange Hill, Newbury Park, Woodford, and Leytonstone stations, should be prepared for detours due to a planned maintenance programme.

Transport for London (TfL), a UK-based government agency responsible for the transport system in Greater London, UK, will be closing the Central Line between Grange Hill and Newbury Park, and between Woodford and Leytonstone, for maintenance work.

London Underground (LU) will be closing the line closed between Grange Hill and Newbury Park on weekdays, and between Woodford and Leytonstone for two weekends (October 27 and 28; and November 3 and 4, 2012), as part of the maintenance programme.

Also, as part of a Tube Upgrade Plan, TfL is currently revamping a fleet of 85 trains and improving the track in order to provide a better customer service.

George McInulty, the programme director of infrastructure for LU, said, ‘This upgrade work is essential to make the Central line as reliable and as safe as possible. We apologise to anyone affected by this closure but carrying the work out during the quieter school holiday period is by far the least disruptive way to do this.

It will avoid a long series of individual weekend closures, save more than £2m of fare and taxpayers’ money and will reduce the overall number of closure days required by more than a third.’

Around 900,000 passengers travel on the Central line every day. The maintenance work is expected to affect around 7,500 passengers on each weekday. London Underground has announced that its tickets will be acceptable on local buses and Network Rail services between Ilford and Stratford. The company is also organising a high-frequency bus service during the period of disrupted underground service.
