Visiting a Christmas market has become a tradition for many across various countries around the world. However, many try to mimic the atmosphere and food served at those in Germany.
With the idea of a ‘German Christmas Market’ being so popular, a new study has identified the most sought-after ones in Germany.
Travel experts at Neuschwanstein Castle Tickets & Tours analysed Instagram posts with hashtags related to 10 Christmas markets in Germany to see which was the most frequently visited.
Multiple hashtags were analysed, including #[location]christmasmarket and #[location]christmasmarkets2024, with the results then totalled for each market.

Frankfurt’s Christmas Market ranked in first place with 11,988 Instagram posts overall. The hashtag most used in association with it was #frankfurtchristmasmarket
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the list was Leipzig. The city’s market achieved 320 Instagram posts. The most popular hashtag, #leipzigchristmasmarket, accounted for 313 of the posts users shared. This market also tied with Cologne for the most hashtags used when posting about it, with four each.
Others in the ranking include Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Nuremberg, which rank second, third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Berlin has the second-highest number of hashtags after Frankfurt, with 9,788 in total. The hashtag most frequently used is #berlinchristmasmarket. It has been used 8,042 times. Munich’s most used hashtag is #munichchristmasmarket with 6,909 posts, and 7,292 total posts about their market.
With 6,072 uses, #colognechristmasmarket is the most frequently used hashtag for Cologne’s Christmas market. Overall, it has 6,935 posts about it. In fifth place, Nuremberg’s market has been posted about 4,497 times, with #nurembergchristmasmarket being used for 4,470 of the posts found.
Towards the end of the list are Hamburg, Dresden, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, and Leipzig.
The market in Hamburg has been shared in 2,956 posts, with the most used hashtag being #hamburgchristmasmarket for 2,756 posts. Dresden’s Christmas market has also been shared on the platform with hashtags 2,389 times. The most used hashtag for the market is #dresdenchristmasmarket.
Among the bottom three is Stuttgart, with 1,097 posts, 1,072 of which included the hashtag #stuttgartchristmasmarket. Heidelberg is in eighth place with 511 videos and pictures shared on the platform about it. 486 of the posts included the hashtag #heidelbergchristmasmarket.
Leipzig comes in last with just 320 posts. 317 of the posts about the market included #leipzigchristmasmarket.

“People have come to associate Germany with Christmas markets, with them often being imitated around the world, but with the high numbers of hashtags in places like Frankfurt and Berlin, it isn’t surprising that many want to visit where these traditions began centuries ago.”
