Hungarian low fares airline Wizz Air has announced a new route from Doncaster Sheffield Airport to Cluj in Romania, offering twice weekly flights starting from July 22, 2016, The Star has reported.
The new Cluj route will be the 11th Wizz route connecting Yorkshire with Central and Eastern European destinations from the airport. The airline also said that it will increase the frequencies on some of Wizz’s most popular routes from Cluj, one of Romania’s largest cities, including the London Luton service that will be operated with three daily flights.
Chris Harcombe, head of Aviation development at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: ‘This is fantastic news for the region. It is great that Wizz Air have reached this major milestone with two million passengers using their services from Doncaster Sheffield airport. Our relationship with them and this proven demand for their services has meant that we are able to continue to grow our route portfolio with Wizz and Cluj will be our eleventh destination adding to popular routes to Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Lithuania.’
The Doncaster Sheffield-Cluj flights went on sale on Friday with lead in fares starting from £21.99 including taxes. ‘We are expecting this new route to carry an additional 30,000 passengers through the airport in its first year of operation,’ Harcombe said.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which offers flights to over 30 destinations, is Wizz Air’s second largest UK base and the only one in Yorkshire. The airport currently operates a total of 33 Wizz Air flights per week to ten destinations including Bucharest in Romania, and Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw in Poland.
‘Wizz have provided Yorkshire passengers with more choice in 2015 with Lublin in Poland and Kosice in Slovakia being added to their destination list. Thanks to these routes passengers from our region have direct access to more cities in more countries than ever before,’ said Harcombe.
‘With the new Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) on track to connect the M18 to the airport, we believe demand in European destinations will continue to increase,’ he added.
