Newcastle International Airport announces return of Lufthansa with new route to Frankfurt

Newcastle International Airport has announced the return of Lufthansa as the airline begins operating a new route to Frankfurt, Germany.

Lufthansa will now operate flights twice a week between Newcastle and the European Financial District throughout July, before increasing to daily from August onward.

The route is an important step in the rebuilding of global connectivity from the region and links the North East to Lufthansa’s largest global hub. As international travel recovers, passengers will be able to access cities throughout Europe, The Middle East, the Americas, Africa and Asia Pacific through Lufthansa’s global network.

The route also provides passengers with a new city break option with Frankfurt’s rich collection of museums, vibrant art scene and proximity to the city of Heidelberg and Germany’s famous Black Forest. Frankfurt and its surrounding Rhine-Main-region is located in the centre of Germany, and is famous for Rheingau wines and its German Ciders. Besides being home to Europe’s highest skyscrapers, the city is known for its popular outdoor Christmas Markets in Europe, which dates to 1393.

Richard Knight, Chief Operating Officer at Newcastle International Airport, said: ‘The return of Lufthansa to the Airport marks another major milestone in our recovery and is fantastic news for us and the region. Flights can be purchased at Lufthansa.com.

‘We are delighted to be able to add Frankfurt to the list of over 70 other direct destinations offered from the Airport. Connectivity is vital for the region’s future and as demand for international travel grows our passengers from the North East will be able to seamlessly connect to destinations across the globe thanks to Lufthansa’s wider network via Frankfurt.

‘The safety of our passengers and staff remains our number one priority. Our Ten Point Plan of COVID-19 safety measures has recently been awarded an accreditation from the International Civil Aviation Organisation and our teams across the Airport are working hard to ensure the terminal remains a safe environment for all.’

‘The resumption of our Lufthansa service at Newcastle Airport starts with a premiere, as we connect Newcastle now with Frankfurt – our biggest hub’ says Marco Willa, General Manager Sales UK Lufthansa Group. ‘It offers all our connections within the same terminal for an easy and reliable transfer. We are also contributing to the tourism in North East England.’
