In an effort to promote more sustainable travel methods, Intrepid Travel and Eurostar are calling on travel agents to consider rail options over flights.
Their initiative highlights the lower carbon impact of trains and showcases the potential of rail travel to offer enriching, stress-free journeys.
Intrepid Travel and Eurostar have joined forces to encourage travel agencies to consider offering rail travel as a greener alternative to air travel. The two companies underscore the benefits of rail, which include reduced carbon emissions. During a recent initiative, 14 agents were invited to experience train travel’s sustainability firsthand, journeying through key European destinations.
The concept of ‘slow travel,’ as experienced by the agents, allows for an immersive journey that integrates the adventure into the process of travelling itself. Carrie Grant of Intrepid Travel articulated the value of this approach, emphasising the reduced stress and environmental impact of trains. ‘You see lots in a short time without the stress of airports,’ she stated.
The initiative also demonstrated Intrepid’s capability to customise rail tours, combining guided tours with free time for exploration. This approach aligns with changing travel preferences, where tourists increasingly seek sustainable and enriching experiences. Such tailor-made journeys elevate train travel beyond mere transportation, presenting it as an integral part of the vacation.
Stephen Roby of Eurostar highlighted the significant environmental benefits of rail travel, with Eurostar trains achieving a carbon footprint reduction of 95% compared to flying. Roby noted that public awareness and demand for environmentally friendly options are driving a renaissance in rail travel. Eurostar plans to enhance this by offering additional day trips for agents and showcasing its services.
Travel professionals who participated in the event voiced strong support for rail options. Rebecca Berzins praised the comfort and relaxation trains provide, while others like Dan Bartholomew Oates highlighted the appeal of such journeys as bucket-list experiences. This feedback underscores a growing industry trend towards prioritising sustainable travel solutions.
Following its 2023 merger with Thalys, Eurostar has set ambitious goals, aiming to increase passenger numbers from 19 million to 30 million annually by 2030. This growth reflects Eurostar’s strategy to capture the rising demand for eco-friendly travel. The company’s efforts align with the broader industry trend of making sustainability a key component of future travel solutions.
Participants like Julie Crumpton and Rachel Wilcox shared their positive experiences, reinforcing the idea that rail travel can enhance the overall travel experience. They mentioned the enthusiasm of guides and the ease of travel, which have bolstered their confidence in recommending rail alternatives to clients.
The move by Intrepid and Eurostar reflects a broader industry shift towards sustainability.
As more travellers seek eco-friendly options, rail travel is poised to become a key component of future travel itineraries.
