    Rising Popularity of Cooler Destinations Among Tour Operators

    There is a growing trend among tourists shifting towards cooler travel destinations, driven by rising temperatures in Southern Europe.

    Independent operators report increased bookings in countries like Norway, Sweden, and Finland, emphasizing nature-focused and active holidays.

    Increasing Interest in Cooler Regions

    Independent tour operators are observing a noticeable shift in traveller preferences towards cooler northern destinations. Countries such as Norway, Sweden, and Finland are becoming increasingly popular. This trend appears to be largely driven by the extreme temperatures that have plagued southern Europe in recent summers.

    Sales at Sunvil have experienced a marked increase in bookings for the Nordic region. Specifically, there’s a significant rise in demand for nature-focused and active holidays. As Rachel Jelley, Sunvil’s Sales and Marketing Manager, noted, “This year we’ve seen a real spike in sales for the Nordic region.”

    Historical Context of Nordic Popularity

    Previously, Sunvil had only seen modest interest in its summer trips to the Nordic region since their introduction in 2007. They currently offer around 100 summer hotels and itineraries. Recent years, however, have seen this interest grow substantially, indicating a shift from traditional Mediterranean summer holidays.

    Customers are now actively seeking summer holidays that avoid the high temperatures of the Mediterranean zones. Rachel Jelley highlighted this change, stating, “There’s been a bit of a shift – people are looking for summer holidays avoiding some of the warmer Mediterranean areas.”

    Economic Factors Encouraging Travel

    The favourable exchange rates have also played a crucial role in boosting bookings to Scandinavian countries. Best Served Scandinavia has observed a notable correlation between increased travel interest and the strong pound.

    According to Sue McAlinden, General Manager of Best Served Scandinavia, “Increased travel to the region has also gone hand in hand with the strong pound. Norway in particular is becoming more affordable than ever, with exchange rates at their highest for more than 40 years.”

    The tour operator has reported a 50% increase in summer traffic over the past two years. A consistent rise in trips incorporating Scandinavian capitals is indicative of this ongoing trend.

    Growing Demand and Market Response

    Regent Holidays has confirmed the upward trend for cooler destinations, with a 33% increase in inquiries and bookings for Norway. There is also a noticeable rise in sales for Finland, while the Baltic region is recovering to pre-Covid levels.

    Andrea Godfrey, Head of Regent Holidays, expressed cautious optimism: “Time will tell whether this trajectory continues, but we’re investing in more staff fams so the team is ready to support agents and help convert bookings.”

    Consumer Preferences and Industry Skepticism

    Despite the growth in demand for cooler destinations, some travel agents report that many consumers are not yet searching out these alternatives. The primary drivers for consumers remain the warmer climates of Spain, Greece, and Turkey.

    A spokesperson for The Advantage Travel Partnership communicated that price continues to be a significant determinant of travel decisions. “We are not seeing any trends in terms of consumers looking for cooler weather. Our top destinations continue to be all the hotspots of Spain, Greece, and Turkey. Price is still driving where people go.”

    This contrast between market growth in Nordic regions and consumer sentiment shows varying perspectives within the travel industry about the emerging trend.

    Visual Appeal of Northern Destinations

    The scenic beauty of locations like Norway’s Lofoten Islands is another compelling reason for increased interest. These picturesque areas provide an attractive alternative to the traditional Mediterranean getaways.

    Tourists are captivated by the unique experiences these regions offer, ranging from stunning natural scenery to cultural richness, making them a competitive option against more conventional destinations.

    Future Outlook for Scandinavian Travel

    The travel industry is closely monitoring whether this newfound enthusiasm for Scandinavia will continue its upward trajectory.

    While some operators are expanding their offerings to meet potential demand, others remain sceptical, noting the persistent allure of hot destinations and the significant cost differences.

    A balanced approach may be required to adequately cater to diverse consumer preferences, ensuring both traditional and emerging travel interests are fully supported.


    The future of travel to cooler destinations remains uncertain yet promising, as industry players adapt to shifting preferences.

    While warmer regions still hold appeal, the allure of cooler climates is evidently gaining traction, reflecting broader changes in travel habits.
