Travel agents are being urged to increase awareness following the rise of new airline scams that have left many customers vulnerable.

Profit, a travel anti-fraud group, is taking proactive steps by advising agents to directly contact their clients if they suspect fraudulent activity, aiming to prevent further financial loss.

The travel industry is facing a growing threat of scams, with fraudulent airline booking portals becoming alarmingly prevalent. Many unsuspecting customers are deceived into paying steep fees for selecting airline seats. According to Barry Gooch, the chairman of anti-fraud organisation Profit, the vast majority of agents remain unaware of this emerging scam. Profit is actively encouraging agents to directly contact their customers to mitigate potential fraud risks.

Agents are being urged to take preventative steps to shield their customers from fraud. Gooch has emphasised the importance of agents warning clients about these scams or assisting them in the booking process. By booking seats directly for their clients, agents can help prevent the loss of substantial amounts of money. He advises checking for malicious software as a precautionary measure, underscoring the pressing need for vigilance in the industry.

David Moon, Head of Business Development at TTNG, highlights that members have access to an extensive range of resources. This includes detailed guidelines on managing phishing risks and dealing with stolen credit card incidents. The collaboration with Profit ensures that information on fraudulent activities is promptly shared across the network, enhancing the safety of transactions within the travel industry.

The partnership’s initiative to collaborate with industry organisations like Profit and TTNG demonstrates a commitment to fostering a safer business environment. Through shared insights and coordinated efforts, the travel sector can address the challenges posed by sophisticated scam operations more efficiently.

Such collaborations are not only reactive but also proactive, providing tools and knowledge to prevent fraud before it occurs. By leveraging shared expertise, the travel industry is staying ahead of fraudsters, ensuring a safer experience for all stakeholders involved.

Advancements in technology have made it easier for fraudsters to develop new scams. As such, a well-informed and educated workforce is essential. Agents who are equipped with the latest knowledge can effectively safeguard their business and their customers from potential threats.

Such reporting contributes to an industry-wide database of fraudulent activities, enhancing the ability to respond swiftly and efficiently. By encouraging transparency and collaboration, Profit is helping create an environment where agents feel supported and empowered to tackle fraud effectively.

It is imperative for the entire travel industry to remain vigilant in the face of fraud. Continual updates on scam tactics and shared responsibilities can foster a proactive culture against fraud. This vigilance ensures a safer travel environment for customers and a more secure operational framework for businesses.

The collaboration among industry stakeholders, spearheaded by Profit, is crucial in the ongoing battle against airline scams.

By sharing resources and insights, the travel sector aims to foster a more secure and trustworthy environment for all stakeholders.
