Research Reveals Decline in Car Hire Costs Across Multiple Destinations

Recent research has highlighted a welcome reduction in car hire costs at popular holiday locations. The study, conducted by Which?, compared prices between 2023 and 2024 for Easter and summer rentals.

Recent analysis indicates a significant decline in car hire costs across various destinations. The data, gathered by consumer champion Which?, encompass over 3,000 rentals during the upcoming Easter and summer holidays. Notably, 11 out of the 13 analysed locations show reduced prices for Easter, while nine exhibit similar trends for the summer period.

In Corfu, consumers enjoy the lowest costs during Easter, with an average hire price of £84. This marks a substantial 47% decrease compared to the previous year’s average of £158. Similarly, Funchal witnessed the most pronounced Easter price reductions, now £266, a dramatic fall from last year’s £412, reflecting a 35% decrease.

Though fewer destinations show summer price reductions, the extent of these savings is noteworthy. Rhodes presents a remarkable decrease, with rental costs falling by £160 to £259, marking a significant 38% drop from the previous year. Funchal follows closely, with a price cut of £146.

Conversely, Rhodes and Nice have recorded Easter price increases. The average cost in Rhodes has surged by 36%, while Nice observes a drastic 97% rise. Similarly, summer prices have escalated in four airports: Malaga, Malta, Nice, and Larnaca, with the most notable rise in Larnaca by 33%.

Naomi Leach from Which? cautions consumers against accepting quotes that seem overly low. While the declining prices are appealing, travellers should remain vigilant about potential hidden charges or unwarranted extras. Booking through reputable companies or trusted brokers ensures a fair transaction.

Despite the overall decrease in costs, current prices remain higher than pre-pandemic levels. On average, Easter rentals have risen by 51% since 2019, with summer prices experiencing a similar 53% increase. This underscores the importance of careful planning and consideration for consumers looking to maximise value in their rental choices.

While prices have decreased, vigilance remains crucial due to ongoing elevated costs compared to pre-pandemic levels. Travellers are advised to book with caution, ensuring deals are fair and transparent.
