Thailand has launched a compensation fund for foreign tourists.

    • Aimed at enhancing tourist safety, the fund totals £1.1 million.
    • Compensation applies to accidents and other incidents, excluding tourist negligence.
    • Eligible tourists must possess valid passports and visit on a tourist visa by August end.
    • This initiative is part of Thailand’s commitment to boost tourist confidence and safety.

Thailand has proactively introduced a £1.1 million compensation fund specifically for foreign tourists who encounter unfortunate incidents such as accidents or crimes while in the country. This initiative is spearheaded by Thailand’s tourism and public health ministries, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing tourist safety.

The compensation fund is intended to provide financial relief to tourists affected by accidents or other unfortunate events. The fund will not cover incidents caused by tourists’ carelessness or illegal activities, maintaining a fair approach to compensation.

Eligibility for the compensation requires tourists to have valid passports and be visiting Thailand on a tourist visa by the end of August. This stipulation ensures that the fund is utilised by genuine tourists who are in the country for legitimate reasons.

The tourism and sports minister, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, emphasized that this assistance scheme is part of ongoing efforts to assure tourist safety and boost their confidence while visiting Thailand. Such measures are vital in positioning Thailand as a safe and welcoming destination for international travellers.

Atchariya Pangma, secretary general of the Thai National Institute of Emergency Medicine, noted the importance of pooling resources to ensure tourists receive timely emergency medical services. This cooperation is poised to enhance the efficiency and quality of Thailand’s emergency medical systems.
