A new era in ferry transportation is emerging as Brittany Ferries launches sea trials for its hybrid ship, the Saint-Malo.

    • The vessel, equipped with an LNG-electric drivetrain, is set for its debut on the Portsmouth-St Malo route.
    • The Saint-Malo will utilise plug-in power at Portsmouth, the UK’s second shore power port.
    • This innovation represents a key milestone in Brittany Ferries’ fleet renewal programme.
    • Christophe Mathieu highlights the hybrid ship as a crucial step towards sustainability.

A new era for ferry travel is being ushered in with Brittany Ferries’ latest innovation, the Saint-Malo, starting its sea trials. This modern, hybrid vessel is designed to enhance the journey between Portsmouth and St Malo, incorporating cutting-edge LNG (liquefied natural gas)-electric drivetrain technology.

When it arrives in the UK this January, ahead of its first scheduled commercial voyage on February 12, 2025, the Saint-Malo will offer an innovative travel experience. The use of LNG-electric technology emulates the industry’s move towards environmental responsibility and efficiency.

The trials, conducted in the Far East, aim to validate the ship’s advanced systems before it undertakes regular service duties. Each journey will highlight its commitment to reduced emissions and cleaner operations, aligning with contemporary environmental goals.

Portsmouth International Port is preparing to welcome this vessel with the installation of plug-in power, becoming the second UK port with such infrastructure. Once operational, it will be the only port supplying shore power exclusively for ferries, another forward-thinking aspect of this development.

When docking or manoeuvring within the port, the Saint-Malo will engage its battery-powered system, ensuring zero emissions. This capacity is pivotal in meeting the increasing environmental regulations and public demand for sustainable travel solutions.

Brittany Ferries’ CEO, Christophe Mathieu, remarked on the fleet renewal’s significance: “Saint-Malo will be the fourth new vessel to join our fleet, in the biggest fleet renewal programme in our company’s history. Our new hybrids are significant steps on our journey to a more sustainable future.” He further added that the vessel’s debut will introduce passengers to a quintessential regional experience with every journey, describing the ships as ‘love letters to the regions they serve.’

The debut of the Saint-Malo marks a pivotal shift towards sustainable ferry travel, illustrating Brittany Ferries’ commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
