United Airlines ICE Threat at SFO Puts Carrier Under Fresh Scrutiny

A United Airlines ICE threat at SFO has gone viral after a ground agent allegedly told a US citizen that immigration enforcement might be called on him during a dispute at San Francisco International Airport on 15 July. According to ABC7 News, the passenger was Julio Varela of San Ramon, who had spent roughly three hours at the airport trying to correct a ticketing error before the confrontation took place. United Airlines has confirmed it is investigating the incident.

Three Hours at the Counter Before the Confrontation

The context matters for understanding the exchange. Varela had already endured an extended wait at the ticketing desk attempting to resolve what ABC7 News described as a ticketing dispute, with the three-hour wait preceding the moment the situation turned hostile. When Varela asked the employee for her name in order to file a complaint, the employee took out her phone and began recording. It was at that point, according to footage that has since circulated widely, that she said: ‘Maybe we should call ICE on you. You’re not acting like a citizen.’

Varela is a US citizen. His response was captured on camera: ‘Say it again. You’re getting fired. I’m suing you.’ During the exchange, the employee reportedly swatted Varela’s phone. The post publishing the footage accumulated hundreds of comments within hours.

United Airlines ICE Threat SFO: Operational Pressure as a Backdrop

The incident did not occur in a vacuum. SFO has been operating under sustained disruption in recent months, driven largely by ongoing runway construction that has reduced the airport’s capacity for both departures and arrivals. United Airlines, as the carrier with by far the largest number of flights through SFO, has absorbed a disproportionate share of that operational strain.

On 15 July, FlightAware data showed the carrier recording delays on roughly a quarter of its SFO flights. Across the airport as a whole, there were 176 departure delays and 232 arrival delays on the day; United accounted for 130 of those delays. FAA ground stops linked to operational constraints have compounded the picture.

United Airlines had already issued a statement acknowledging the construction-related disruption: ‘Planned runway construction at San Francisco International Airport may cause flight delays, and we encourage customers to check their flight status in the United app. Additionally, we are reviewing the FAA’s updated guidance to determine if we will need to make any changes to our flight schedule in the future.’ Passengers travelling through SFO are advised to check their status via the United Airlines app before travelling to the airport.

    Passenger and Industry Reaction

The comments beneath the footage have been largely critical of the employee. One viewer wrote: ‘I don’t know what happened before the recording started, but she is about to be out of a job. You don’t go there.’ Several others stated they had already filed formal complaints, with at least one commenter saying they intended to raise the matter in person with airport supervisors at SFO. ‘You can’t threaten ICE on people and think it’s okay,’ one wrote.

Others framed the incident in terms of United’s broader reputation at the airport. ‘That’s not the way you want to get Corporate’s attention,’ one commenter noted, a sentiment that captures the particular difficulty for the carrier: the United Airlines ICE threat at SFO lands at a moment when the airline is already fielding passenger frustration generated by weeks of construction-related delays at its largest West Coast hub.

The footage also prompted some passengers to share their own experiences with United staff, including one account of a long-haul flight between Tokyo and SFO in which a crew member questioned the authenticity of a passenger’s passport before a colleague intervened. United reportedly offered that passenger a $200 flight credit and acknowledged the complaint.

What precisely triggered the exchange between Varela and the employee, beyond the ticketing dispute he had been trying to resolve for three hours, has not been established. United Airlines has confirmed it is reviewing the incident; the outcome of that review has not yet been disclosed.
