United Airlines Q2 results top forecasts as $6bn fuel bill looms over full year

United Airlines Q2 results released on 15 July 2026 beat Wall Street expectations, with the carrier posting adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share against analyst predictions of $1.85, even as the airline braces for nearly $6 billion in additional fuel expense across the full year.

Chief executive Scott Kirby framed the performance as evidence of the airline’s resilience, saying it is able to ‘thrive in every environment’ even when oil prices spiked in March 2026. ‘We quickly and decisively acted to adjust our schedules, while simultaneously doubling down on our customer investments,’ Kirby said.

Revenue climbs 16% but operating income falls sharply

United’s total revenue for the second quarter rose 16% year on year to $17.67 billion, up from $15.2 billion in the same period of 2025. Premium revenue led the way, up 16% compared with Q2 2025, while economy class revenue grew 11%.

Despite the top-line growth, profitability came under pressure. Operating income fell 17% to $1 billion from $1.3 billion in Q2 2025, and net income dropped 17% to $805 million from $973 million a year earlier. The drag came primarily from fuel: Q2 fuel expenses were up $2.3 billion, though United said it recovered around half of that increase within the quarter.

The full-year fuel picture is more daunting. Based on oil prices as of 14 July 2026, United projects nearly $6 billion in added fuel expense for 2026 compared with expectations at the start of the year. The carrier’s ability to pass those costs through to passengers will be closely watched across the remainder of the year.

Fuel cost recovery expected to improve through Q3 and Q4

According to Yahoo Finance, United expects to recover between 80% and 90% of its additional fuel costs in the third quarter, and all of it in the fourth quarter, an improving trajectory from the roughly 50% recovered in Q2. For Q3, the airline has guided for adjusted earnings of $2.50 to $3.50 per share, signalling confidence that the worst of the fuel-driven margin compression may be concentrated in the first half.

The full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share guidance has been raised to $9 to $11. That figure represents a partial recovery from April, when United cut its January forecast of $12 to $14 per share down to $7 to $11 per share in response to the deteriorating oil price environment. The upward revision at the top end of guidance reflects both the stronger-than-expected Q2 outturn and the projected improvement in fuel cost recovery.

United Airlines Q2 results include Starlink milestone

United Airlines also confirmed that 450 aircraft are now fitted with Starlink connectivity, with close to 1,000 aircraft expected to be equipped by the end of 2026. The carrier said it remains on track to bring Starlink to its entire fleet by the end of 2027, a programme that has become a centrepiece of its in-flight product investment. Premium cabin performance suggests the customer investment is yielding returns, with premium revenue outpacing the broader top-line growth rate in Q2.

United’s raised full-year guidance and improving fuel recovery outlook will set the tone for how the carrier is positioned heading into the second half of 2026, with Q4 now pencilled in as the quarter in which fuel headwinds are fully absorbed.
