US Airport Flight Cancellations Top 1,477 as United SHARES Outage Compounds Weekend Weather Chaos

US airport flight cancellations reached 1,477 on Sunday 20 July 2026, with a further 9,947 delays recorded within, into or out of the United States, according to FlightAware, as severe weather and a pre-existing technology failure at United Airlines pushed the country’s busiest hubs into a second consecutive day of mass disruption.

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport bore the heaviest load, recording 280 cancelled flights and 1,179 delays, the most of any airport worldwide on the day. Delta Air Lines, whose primary hub is Atlanta, suffered 832 delays out of Hartsfield-Jackson alone, accounting for nearly half of its total flight volume through that airport. Across all its operations, Delta recorded the highest cancellation count of any single carrier, reaching the 400 mark on Sunday.

United Airlines SHARES System Fault Added to Disruption Pressure

The weekend’s operational picture was made considerably more complicated by a technology outage at United Airlines the previous day. According to AeroXplorer, the outage struck on Saturday 18 July 2026, disrupting check-in, boarding, and baggage operations at major airports across the United States. United confirmed the fault lay in its SHARES reservation system, which manages ticketing, check-in, and seat assignment processes. Simple Flying reported the outage lasted around one hour and 15 minutes, but the knock-on effect on schedules carried into Sunday, adding United’s ground-operations disruption to weather-related pressure that was already straining network capacity across the country.

United recorded 964 delays on Sunday, placing it fourth among US carriers by that measure. Southwest Airlines led the delay table with 1,706 delays, followed by Delta at 1,440 and American Airlines at 1,380.

Northeast Airports and the New York Metro Area Hit Hard by US Airport Flight Cancellations

Beyond Atlanta, the New York metro cluster sustained some of the heaviest cancellation volumes. John F. Kennedy International Airport recorded 118 cancelled departures, Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport each recorded 71, and Boston Logan International Airport saw 61. Reagan National Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago O’Hare, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Orlando, and Detroit also reported above-average disruption volumes.

Passenger frustration was visible across social media throughout the day. A traveller identified as DeeDee, booked on an American Airlines service from Washington DC to Charlotte, described a sequence of mechanical issues that she posted about on X: ‘What is going on with @AmericanAir ?? Been flying for 35 years and never heard of this many mechanical issues with every flight around us!! Our flight was diverted from DC to Charlotte heading to Destin, they said cockpit had no AC, yet captain came off not breaking a sweat. Then we find out several people on our flight had theirs cancelled YESTERDAY for mechanical issues. Sitting in Charlotte and there are 2 other destinations next to us that have delays due to mechanical issues!! Tried to get on another flight and those are delayed. This is crazy.’

At Hartsfield-Jackson, rebooking queues compounded the disruption, with passengers reporting waits for ground staff on top of the flight delays themselves. One Delta traveller described on X receiving an offer to rebook onto a flight with a departure time already in the past, as well as an alternative routing from an airport described as three hours away. The major airlines responded by activating flexible rebooking policies at affected airports nationwide.

Delta Opens Flexible Rebooking for Northeast and Atlanta Flying

Delta has put two separate flexible rebooking offers in place. The first covers flights on 21 and 22 July at Northeast hubs, cited by the carrier as a response to inclement weather: the airports included are Boston, Baltimore, Washington-Reagan National, Newark, White Plains, Washington-Dulles, JFK, LaGuardia, and Philadelphia. A separate rebooking window applies to Atlanta flights affected by thunderstorms on 20 July.

The breadth of that list reflects how thoroughly the storm track has overlapped with the US network’s highest-traffic corridors. With further weather systems possible across the Northeast in the coming days, operators and ground handlers at the affected hubs will be managing schedule recovery alongside any fresh disruption as the week opens.
