Tropical Storm Bertha landfall is now a mid-week certainty for the northern Gulf Coast, with the National Hurricane Center tracking a slow, lopsided system bearing down on Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. As of 8 AM EST on Tuesday, sustained winds stood at 50 MPH, with a chance of slight strengthening before the storm crosses the coast.
Tropical Storm Bertha Landfall: Track, Timing and Wind Thresholds
The storm is the second named system of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the centre, and Hurricane Hunter aircraft observations put the minimum central pressure at 999 mb (29.50 inches). By 11 AM ET on Tuesday, according to USA Today, Bertha was approximately 40 miles south of Pascagoula, Mississippi, moving west-northwest at just 6 mph, a crawling pace that will prolong its impact across the region.
The National Hurricane Center’s hourly breakdown shows peak winds of 60 MPH expected off the coast between Panama City and Pensacola at 2 PM on Tuesday. Sustained 50 MPH winds are then forecast as Bertha nears the Mississippi coast by Wednesday at 2 AM, dropping to 45 MPH as the storm makes landfall near Gulfport at 2 PM Wednesday. By early Thursday, Bertha is expected to hug the coastline at 40 MPH as it passes New Orleans, with wind shear reducing gusts to 35 MPH as the system moves past Lafayette, Abbeville and Lake Charles.
Meteorologists report that strong wind shear in Louisiana could weaken Bertha further, with the storm potentially dissipating as early as Thursday. That same wind shear is currently keeping the bulk of Bertha’s thunderstorm activity south of its centre, which limits the overland rainfall threat for communities along the immediate coast.
Surge, Flooding and the Aftermath Heading Into the Carolinas
While Bertha is unlikely to become a major hurricane, its slow movement makes it a persistent flooding risk. Storm surge of 2 to 4 feet above normal is possible from the mouth of the Mississippi River through south-east Louisiana and to the Alabama-Florida border, with the highest inundation risk coinciding with high tides on Wednesday and Thursday morning. A storm surge watch is in effect across this stretch, meaning life-threatening coastal inundation is possible within 48 hours of the warning’s issuance.
Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected across the western Florida Panhandle through southern Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, rising to up to 6 inches in the strongest thunderstorms. Urban areas, particularly New Orleans, face the greatest exposure to localised flash flooding. Rough surf and a high risk of rip currents are forecast to persist along beaches from the Florida Panhandle westward through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana until at least Thursday.
The post-landfall picture carries its own risks. As Bertha’s remnants push north and east, a stalling cold front is expected to draw Gulf moisture up into the South-east. The result may be heavy, flooding rain across the Carolinas, a secondary threat that extends the storm’s disruptive reach well beyond the immediate landfall zone.
Airport and Travel Disruption Expected Through Thursday Night
For travel operators and airline staff managing the Gulf Coast network, the most acute disruption window runs from late Tuesday through Thursday night. Gulf Coast airports are expected to see the highest concentration of delays during that period as Bertha makes landfall and tracks westward. By Friday, the system is forecast to weaken considerably as it moves into Texas, with winds down to 35 MPH through Beaumont before dropping to 30 MPH on Saturday as the storm, now at its weakest, passes near Houston and Somerville.
Tropical Storm Warnings remain in place for Alabama, Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. Tropical Storm Watches have been extended to cover New Orleans and Panama City Beach as a precaution. Residents and operators in those areas should treat the warnings as active guidance: even a disorganised, weakening system moving at 6 mph can deliver sustained coastal flooding and disrupted transport links for several days at a time.
