Somon Air 737 MAX delivery brings type to Tajikistan for the first time

The Somon Air 737 MAX delivery completed on 3 August 2026 in Dushanbe marks a double first: the airline’s inaugural MAX operation and the aircraft type’s debut in Tajikistan. Boeing and the Tajik carrier jointly announced the handover, with the 737-8 becoming the first of two aircraft Somon Air is leasing from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) as part of a broader fleet modernisation programme.

Somon Air 737 MAX delivery: what the aircraft brings to the network

The 737-8 will underpin Somon Air’s short and medium-haul flying across Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Boeing says the type offers stronger range and operating economics than the previous-generation jets it replaces, with a capacity of up to 210 passengers depending on configuration and a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles. The aircraft is expected to cut fuel use and carbon emissions by 20% against the jets it succeeds, supporting route economics across the network.

Abdulkosim Valiev, CEO of Somon Air, said Tajikistan’s central geographic location, paired with the 737-8’s improved range, gives the airline an opportunity to open new routes with better fuel economics. He added that Somon Air values its long-term relationship with Boeing and expects to continue growing its fleet with modern, efficient aircraft. Boeing has separately flagged service to London, Beijing, and Guangzhou as destinations that the expanded network could support.

Paul Righi, Boeing’s vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India, and South Asia, said the 737-8 is the right aircraft to support Somon Air’s evolution from a regional carrier into an emerging international one over the past two decades.

DAE’s role and the broader lease commitment

Firoz Tarapore, CEO of DAE, said the company was pleased to deliver both Somon Air’s first 737-8 and the first 737-8 in Tajikistan, describing it as part of a broader two-aircraft commitment between the companies. DAE Capital’s fleet includes more than 190 Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft, positioning it as one of the larger lessors of the type globally.

The lease arrangement traces back to an agreement signed in Dushanbe by Valiev and then-DAE Capital president David Houlihan. It forms part of a wider commitment in which Somon Air agreed to purchase up to 14 fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX aircraft, announced roughly a year and a half before the delivery. Before settling on Boeing, Somon Air had previously expressed interest in both Airbus and Embraer aircraft.

At the time that deal was signed, the airline’s fleet consisted of four Boeing 737-800s and two 737-900ERs, each named after Tajik national heroes or historical figures. Somon Air currently operates six Next-Generation 737 aircraft to 29 destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East from its hub at Dushanbe International Airport. Founded in 2008 as a competitor to Tajik Air, it has operated an all-Boeing fleet throughout its history.

MAX production ramp-up adds context to the delivery

The Somon Air 737 MAX delivery arrives as Boeing accelerates output of the type. According to TechTimes, the MAX programme had reached 47 aircraft per month as of late May 2026 following FAA approval of a rate increase, with Boeing targeting 52 per month by early 2027 through the addition of a fourth assembly line at its Everett, Washington, facility. By April 2026, Boeing had delivered 2,267 MAX jets to 74 operators, with more than 4,800 additional aircraft on order, reflecting the sustained demand that underpins lessor commitments such as DAE’s.

Somon Air’s eligibility to operate the type on international routes is supported by its existing regulatory standing. The carrier holds IOSA certification and EASA operating authorisation, credentials that matter particularly as it targets European destinations including London.

With the first 737-8 now in service and a second aircraft still to follow under the DAE lease, Somon Air’s next stated milestones will be the launch of new routes made viable by the aircraft’s extended range, with London among the destinations Boeing has cited as part of the airline’s international growth plan.
