The aircraft had taken off from MYR at approximately 8:00 AM, bound for Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The flight was airborne for 36 minutes before the crew made the decision to turn around, touching back down at Myrtle Beach at roughly 8:36 AM. All 172 passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no reported injuries.
Engine Flames Visible From Cabin and Ground
As flight 1760 climbed out over the Atlantic, passengers in the cabin quickly became aware that something was wrong. One passenger account, reported by ABC News, described a loud bang followed by sustained rumbling: ‘I heard this loud bang and some rumbling, and it was significant enough that I turned to my husband and asked him to please cover my daughter’s ears. It was so loud.’
Passenger video captured flames emerging from the left-side engine, visible through the cabin windows. Controllers in the Myrtle Beach tower independently observed flames and reported seeing birds entering the engines, something passengers seated inside the aircraft were unable to see from their positions. The crew levelled the aircraft off over the ocean before circling back to MYR.
The pilot transmitted the standard emergency call to Air Traffic Control: ‘Mayday, mayday, mayday. We’ve got an engine problem here.’ With ATC support, the 737-800 returned safely to its gate.
A subsequent account from a YouTube user summarised the situation: ‘Passengers reported severe shuddering on the left side of the aircraft. Ground videos captured occasional flames and sparks shooting from the left engine. However, airline officials noted there was no indication of an active, sustained engine fire.’ According to that account, a later inspection found ‘significant amounts of bird remains and feathers.’
The aircraft was pulled from service for a thorough inspection by the American Airlines maintenance team. The airline arranged alternative travel for affected passengers to reach Charlotte later the same day.
