DJT Airport Code Change Goes Live as American Airlines Briefs Staff on Passenger Pushback

The DJT airport code change at what is now President Donald J. Trump International Airport in West Palm Beach became operational on 18 August 2026, with American Airlines rolling out a staff script to manage passenger friction over the new three-letter identifier replacing the long-standing PBI designation.

From PBI to DJT: How the Code Change Took Effect

Florida passed legislation renaming Palm Beach International Airport, and Governor Ron DeSantis signed that legislation on 30 March 2026, according to WPBF. The formal decision to proceed with the rename, however, was recorded on 9 July 2026, leaving a compressed window for airlines, global distribution systems and passengers to adapt. 17 August 2026 was the final day the PBI code remained valid for reservations; from 18 August, all customer-facing channels switched to DJT.

The code transition covers IATA designations as well as Sabre, other global distribution systems, and American’s internal AACoRN system. Operationally, the airline has confirmed that terminals, runways, schedules and airline operations remain unchanged: the DJT airport code change is, in its own words, purely administrative.

Eric Trump was among the first to arrive at the newly designated airport in early July, shortly after the administrative rename took effect. The arrival was not universally welcomed by those present.

American Airlines Equips Staff to Handle the DJT Airport Code Change

Anticipating that passengers would object, American Airlines began contacting affected travellers in early August and prepared a formal script for frontline employees. The script instructs staff to explain that Florida state legislation drove the renaming and that IATA subsequently updated the three-letter code in line with standard international procedure.

In full, the operational guidance states: ‘American will begin referring to Palm Beach International Airport as President Donald J. Trump International Airport when it is officially renamed on 09JUL26. Effective 18AUG26, the airport’s IATA code will change from PBI to DJT on all customer-facing channels, as well as Sabre, other Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and AACoRN. On 18AUG26, you should begin servicing PNRs and VCRs using the DJT airport code.’

When passengers ask why the change was made, the script directs staff to point to the state legislation and IATA’s role in formalising the new identifier. The airline has no legal standing to resist or delay a code change mandated by IATA in response to a state-level statutory rename.

For frequent fliers, the muscle memory of entering PBI in search and booking tools is a practical sticking point, and American acknowledges the adjustment period in its communications. The new code appears across the airline’s app, on AA.com, and at airport touchpoints.

Passenger Reaction and the Broader Commercial Questions

The DJT airport code change has drawn sustained criticism on social media. One Reddit user raised the possibility of confusion arising from multiple Trump-named locations, citing the proposed renaming of New York City’s Penn Station as context. Another wrote: ‘Trump has apparently patented every possible name combination of the airport merchandise, so he can charge royalties on everything. No other president makes money from their name being used. To others, it is an honor, but to Trump it is just another grift.’

On Facebook, a commenter cited an estimated cost of $5.5 million to taxpayers and airport revenues, and flagged trademark filings associated with the airport name that reportedly cover merchandise and services including watches, coins, clothing, travel bags, flight suits, airport lounges and buses. ‘Whether any money ultimately changes hands, that’s a level of overlap between public office and private branding that I don’t think we’ve seen before in America,’ the commenter wrote.

Others questioned whether Palm Beach County residents should have had a vote on the rename, and raised concerns about what formal branding of the airport could mean for tourism perceptions. The safety lawsuit filed ahead of the change, which alleged potential confusion and multiple safety hazards, had not prevented the administrative process from advancing to the 18 August activation date.

With the DJT airport code now live across all booking and distribution systems, travel agents and tour operators handling West Palm Beach itineraries will need to update any pre-built templates or automated fare searches that reference the old PBI code to avoid disruption to passenger name records.
