LaGuardia Flight Cancellations Weather Chaos Peaks as FAA Issues Northeast Ground Stops

LaGuardia flight cancellations weather disruption pushed the New York hub to the top of FlightAware‘s global cancellation rankings on Thursday, 20 August, after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued multiple ground stops across eight Northeast airports following severe thunderstorms.

LaGuardia International Airport (LGA) recorded 112 departure cancellations (20%) and 147 departure delays (26%), alongside 106 arrival cancellations and 154 arrival delays. That placed LGA ahead of every other airport worldwide for cancellations on the day, according to FlightAware data.

The FAA ground stops extended across the region. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) logged 82 departure cancellations and 228 departure delays. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) saw 79 departure cancellations, while Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) recorded 56 departure cancellations but sustained the heaviest delay rate of those affected, with 36% of departures delayed.

Regional Carriers Bear the Brunt of LaGuardia Flight Cancellations Weather Event

At the airline level, the disruption fell disproportionately on regional operators. Republic Airways led all carriers with 108 total cancellations (55 departures, 53 arrivals) across the affected network. Endeavor Air, operating as Delta Connection, recorded 59 total cancellations (31 departures, 28 arrivals), making it the second most affected carrier. Among mainline operators, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, and United Airlines each reported single-digit total cancellations on the day.

By Friday morning at 07:00 EST, LGA’s figures were gradually rising again, per FlightAware, with four departure cancellations, six arrival cancellations, seven departure delays and four arrival delays recorded. PHL and JFK had overtaken LGA in raw cancellation numbers by that point, though further showers in the forecast meant LGA’s disruption remained a live concern through the day.

Disruption Window Could Stretch to 30 August

The weather outlook poses a prolonged challenge for carriers operating into and out of LGA. AccuWeather’s eight-day forecast, covering Friday 21 August through Sunday 30 August, points to showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, a clearer window from Monday through mid-Wednesday, then renewed rain and thunderstorms from late Wednesday. Next Friday, 28 August, and Saturday, 29 August, carry further shower and thunderstorm risks at LGA, before conditions improve on Sunday, 30 August.

Delta Air Lines has issued a weather advisory covering LGA alongside JFK, EWR, BOS, DCA, BWI, IAD, HPN and PHL. For flights affected on 20 August, Delta requires rebooking on or before 23 August, with rebooked travel also beginning no later than that date. Passengers unable to reschedule within those parameters can apply unused ticket value toward a new booking, subject to a one-year limit from the original ticket issuance. A Delta spokesperson confirmed to TheTravel that its meteorology team is monitoring evolving conditions and that any further waivers will be communicated via delta.com. ‘Should any waivers be issued, customers will be notified and delta.com will be updated accordingly,’ the spokesperson said.

American Airlines issued its own advisory, offering fee-free rebooking at the same core Northeast airports from 18 August, with alternative travel required between 19 and 23 August. That rebooking window closed on 20 August, so passengers whose onward travel remains disrupted are advised to contact the carrier directly for assistance. TheTravel has approached both Delta and American to confirm whether flexible rebooking will be extended to cover the disruption period through 29 August.

JetBlue has also been active in the region’s weather waiver landscape. According to Travel Market Report, JetBlue waived change and cancellation fees as well as fare differences for flights touching JFK, LGA, EWR, HPN, ISP or BOS on 10 and 11 August, with rebooked travel permitted through Saturday, 15 August, illustrating the carrier’s pattern of issuing waivers during Northeast weather events. Whether a comparable policy will be extended to cover flights affected by the current disruption window has not been confirmed.

With Delta’s meteorology team still assessing conditions and the AccuWeather forecast carrying thunderstorm risk through to 29 August, affected passengers should monitor carrier advisory pages for any updates to rebooking windows before the weekend.
