easyJet launches new London Luton – Catania route

easyJet, a UK-based airline, has launched a new service from London Luton Airport to Catania in Sicily, Italy’s largest island.

Nearly 20,000 easyJet passengers are expected to fly between the two destinations each year. The new service is to operate three times weekly and the inaugural flight will take off from London Luton Airport on March 30 next year.

Located on the eastern coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, Catania has a panoramic setting, with coastal views and beaches bordered by Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. Catania city, which was reconstructed after being destroyed by an earthquake in the 17th century, is renowned for its grand piazzas, baroque architecture and historical monuments like the Dupomo Cathedral, as well as metropolitan attractions like Via Etnea, the area’s shopping capital.

Nearby tourist spots include the medieval town of Taormina with its breathtaking views, and Siracus, another tourist attraction further inland, that offers visitors a wealth of history and magnificent Greek remains.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’ UK commercial manager, said: ‘We’re delighted to be adding Catania, Sicily to easyJet’s growing network of year-round destinations from London Luton Airport. With fares available from as little as £40.49 we’re sure that the new services will prove extremely popular. Italy is rapidly becoming the destination of choice for generation easyJet travellers who are looking for a city, beach or ski break and we’re providing an easy and affordable way to do that throughout the year.’

easyJet has recently announced its summer 2014 schedule from London Luton Airport, with over one million seats on sale across its network. Catania is the airline’s 40th destination from the airport and fifth Italian route from London Luton, the other four being Milan, Olbia, Pisa and Venice.

easyJet’s new flights from London Luton to Catania will operate every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Seats are presently on sale at easyJet.com, with fares starting from £40.49, based on two adults travelling on the same booking.
